NOT ONLY EXPRESSING ASPIRATIONS, STUDENTS ALSO CLEANING UP AFTER PROTEST

UNAIR NEWS – About 15,000 Surabaya students in the Civil Power Alliance (Action) voiced their aspirations in front of East Java Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) Building. After the aspirations conveyed, not a few leaflets and garbage left behind.

As a response to this, some UNAIR students made a social movement. They distributed free mineral water and cleaned up the garbage left from the demonstration.

Iswandi Zulkarnain as the volunteer coordinator gathered the masses who were going to join the protest, but did not know what to do after being there. “Actually this movement started from my own confusion. I want to take part in the action, but I don’t know what to do, “said the student Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNAIR.

“Then, I tried to make posters and gather people who had the same taste as I felt,” he added.

Iswandi’s idea was responded well to by other students. There are about 50 volunteers joined in the movement. The volunteers were not only from UNAIR, but also from Surabaya State Islamic University (UINSA) and Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS), and other universities in Surabaya. There are some donors for the mo.

Together with other volunteers, the student of Development Economics Program wanted to show the public who did not agree with today’s demonstration. “That students can hold protest, but also love the environment. We show it by cleaning the garbage up, ” he concluded.

Iswandi emphasized that the social movements they carried out were not supported by any organization. Aside from Iswandi’s personal initiative, several other UNAIR student groups also provided free sunblock for the protest masses.

Iswandi hoped that the protest with other volunteers can ignite students’ social sensitivity to the environment and. “Our goal is not to clean the site as clean as possible, but to foster a sense of environmental love for the students taking part in the demonstration,” he said.

“We should not only speak up, without caring about the environment,” he said.
