ANDOPARASITIC WORM INFECTION IN GROUPERS
One of the hybrid groupers that have been developed to obtain superior seed quality is the Cantang grouper Epinephelus fuscoguttatus x Epinephelus lanceolatus (E. fuscoguttatus x E.lanceolatus). Cantang grouper is a hybrid fish between female tiger grouper and male kertang grouper. Morphological characteristics of Cantang groupers are similar to their parent species, but better growth. Cantang grouper also has other advantages, such as high disease resistance, better tolerance to the environment and can spread at high densities. Besides having benefits, the potential of Cantang grouper has increased production from year to year. KKP statistics show that in 2015 grouper production reached 335.4 tons, in 2016 646.06 tons, and in 2017 it reached 742.96 tons.
Various obstacles in grouper cultivation that need serious monitoring include water quality and disease. This disease can infect both groupers that are stored in floating net cages (KJA) or in maintenance ponds. Common obstacles that often found in fish farming in ponds are caused by disease and decreased water quality because poor water quality will always be followed by increasing pathogens, so they can infect the fish. Poor water quality management in the maintenance of fish pond will cause a buildup of organic matter at the bottom of the pond. This will decrease water quality and support the growth of bacteria causing disease in fish. It will cause decreasing dissolved oxygen content and cause a decay.
One indication of stressed fish is an increase in blood sugar due to hormone secretion from the adrenal glands, increased respiratory rhythm, and an inflammatory response will decrease hormones from the adrenal glands. Stressed fish will experience a primary and secondary response, an increase in blood glucose after a secondary response, an increase in the amount of stress hormones such as cortisol and catecholamines. Depressed fish will experience growth disturbances, productivity, homeostatic mechanisms in the body, and decreased endurance, making them susceptible to disease, whether caused by parasites, bacteria, fungi or viruses.
Based on those backgrounds, it is necessary to conduct a correlation study between fish blood glucose levels and endoparasitic infections in Cantang grouper (E. fuscoguttatus x E. lanceolatus). It will be used as scientific information about endoparasites that attack groupers. Information can be used as a grouper commodity selection by farmers to minimize losses due to endoparasitic infections.
