On Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 12:00 to 12:30 WIB, the Ministry of Human Resources Development, the Student Executive Board, and the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Airlangga successfully concluded the second episode of POLISH (Podcast in English), part of the English Week series. This engaging and educational podcast program aims to improve students’ English proficiency while offering insightful discussions on international academic experiences.

Episode two featured an inspiring guest, Dzaky Irsyad, a scholarship recipient at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) in Taiwan. During the podcast, Dzaky shared his personal journey studying abroad, highlighting both the challenges he faced and the strategies he used to overcome them. He recounted the initial cultural shock he experienced, noting that some social norms, such as handshaking, were uncommon in Taiwan. These differences initially made social interactions awkward, requiring him to adapt quickly to a new environment.

Language barriers presented another significant challenge. Most local residents were not fluent in English, which pushed Dzaky to employ translation apps and study Mandarin to facilitate daily communication. This immersive adaptation process enabled him to better integrate into the local community while also enriching his intercultural understanding. Dzaky emphasized that learning to navigate these differences was a vital part of his growth and academic success.

In addition to cultural and linguistic adjustments, Dzaky faced difficulties in finding halal food. Many Taiwanese restaurants did not meet Islamic dietary standards, compelling him to cook in his apartment and seek support from local Muslim communities. These communities offered resources such as prayer spaces and halal food bazaars, helping him maintain his dietary practices while fostering a sense of belonging. Despite these challenges, Dzaky maintained a high level of dedication and successfully completed his studies within three and a half months, demonstrating resilience and effective time management.

The podcast was hosted by the charismatic 2023 Ambassador, Samara Cantik Genitri, whose interactive approach created a comfortable and engaging listening experience. Beyond providing a glimpse into the life of an international student, this episode inspired other FPK Unair students to embrace challenges and pursue their academic and personal aspirations. The discussion emphasized that with persistence and adaptability, obstacles can transform into opportunities for growth, both academically and personally.
