The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Airlangga (FPK UNAIR) continues to strengthen practice-based learning through a field practicum attended by 28 sixth-semester Aquaculture students specializing in Marine Science and Technology on April 27, 2026. The activity took place in the coastal area of South Malang, specifically at Clungup Beach and Gatra Beach, as part of the implementation of the Marine Resource Conservation, Marine Bioprospecting, and Marine Survey and Mapping courses.
This field practicum was designed as an integrative learning strategy that combines classroom theory with direct field experience. Through the activity, students were not only introduced to theoretical concepts related to marine ecosystems but were also actively involved in scientific practices associated with coastal resource management and marine conservation. The initiative reflects FPK UNAIR’s commitment to providing students with experiential learning opportunities that are relevant to current environmental and marine challenges.
During the activity, students conducted observations of coastal environmental conditions, identified marine resource potentials, and practiced basic field data collection techniques. The practicum was carried out systematically under the supervision of course lecturers to ensure that all learning objectives were achieved effectively. Through direct engagement with the coastal ecosystem, students gained deeper insights into the ecological dynamics and management complexities of marine and coastal environments.
The practicum also allowed students to experience real-world applications of marine conservation principles. By interacting directly with coastal ecosystems, participants were able to understand the relationship between environmental sustainability, marine biodiversity, and human activities. This contextual learning approach encouraged students to analyze environmental issues critically while strengthening their scientific perspectives regarding sustainable marine resource management.
All 28 participating students showed strong enthusiasm throughout the program. Their direct interaction with the environment created a more immersive learning atmosphere, enabling them to better understand the complexity of marine ecosystems beyond theoretical discussions in the classroom. The field-based approach also encouraged collaboration among students, fostering teamwork and communication skills that are essential in academic and professional settings.
The primary objective of the practicum was to improve student competencies in marine sciences, particularly in conservation, marine resource exploration, and coastal mapping techniques. In addition, the activity aimed to cultivate environmental awareness and encourage students to develop a stronger sense of responsibility toward marine sustainability. Through practical exposure, students were expected to become more adaptive and capable of addressing future challenges in the fisheries and marine sector.
The benefits gained from the activity extended beyond academic knowledge. Students also strengthened their practical skills, analytical abilities, and soft skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and field communication. These competencies are considered essential for preparing students to contribute effectively in research, industry, and environmental management sectors related to fisheries and marine sciences.
This activity also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the implementation of experiential and practice-based learning methods. Furthermore, the program supports SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by promoting awareness of marine conservation and sustainable coastal ecosystem management. Through direct field exposure, students are encouraged to become future marine professionals who prioritize sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Through this field practicum, FPK UNAIR once again demonstrated its commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically competent but also equipped with practical experience and environmental awareness. The activity is expected to strengthen students’ scientific mindsets while encouraging them to actively contribute to sustainable marine and coastal management in the future.
