Surabaya – On Friday, November 7, 2025, the Fisheries Product Technology Student Association of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine successfully organized a Fisheries Study Visit, also known as a Working Visit, at BPPMHKP II Surabaya. The program was attended by 40 students of the Fisheries Product Technology Study Program, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, Universitas Airlangga. The visit aimed to provide students with direct exposure to the implementation of quality control and safety assurance systems for marine and fisheries products within a government institution that plays a crucial role in maintaining the standards of Indonesian fisheries products before they enter the market. This activity represents a concrete effort to bridge academic learning with professional practice in the fisheries quality assurance sector.
The program commenced with welcoming remarks from representatives of BPPMHKP II Surabaya, followed by a comprehensive presentation on the institution’s roles and functions in ensuring the quality and safety of fisheries products. The session was delivered by the Acting Head of BPPMHKP II Surabaya, who elaborated on regulatory frameworks, inspection mechanisms, certification procedures, and monitoring systems applied prior to product distribution. Students were introduced to the institutional responsibilities in implementing national and international standards to guarantee food safety and consumer protection. The second presentation focused on laboratory facilities and the specific functions of each testing unit, including chemical, microbiological, and organoleptic laboratories. Detailed explanations were provided regarding analytical methods, sample preparation, hazard detection, and compliance verification procedures aligned with SNI (Indonesian National Standards), ISO standards, and regulations issued by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
Following the presentation sessions, students participated in a guided laboratory tour to directly observe testing processes and technological equipment used in maintaining product quality standards. During the tour, participants witnessed firsthand how laboratory analyses are conducted systematically, from sample receipt and preparation to analytical testing and documentation. The visit allowed students to connect theoretical concepts learned in quality assurance, food safety, and fisheries product technology courses with real-world implementation in a professional setting. Observing standardized procedures reinforced their understanding of traceability systems, hazard analysis, and critical control points applied in government-supervised quality assurance. This experiential learning approach strengthens students’ competencies in laboratory practices, regulatory compliance, and professional ethics within the fisheries sector.
Overall, the Fisheries Study Visit generated positive impacts both internally and externally. For students, the activity enhanced practical insight and deepened their comprehension of fisheries product quality assurance systems, complementing their academic coursework. For BPPMHKP II Surabaya, the visit demonstrated institutional support for developing future professionals in the field of fisheries quality and safety. It is expected that collaboration between the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Universitas Airlangga and BPPMHKP II Surabaya will continue through expanded initiatives such as internships, joint research, technical training, and capacity-building programs. Strengthening synergy between academic institutions and professional agencies is essential to advancing sustainable fisheries governance and ensuring high-quality marine products in both national and international markets.
