SURABAYA – The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) welcomed Khairudin Irfansyah, an alumnus of the Diploma III in Fish Health Technology at UNAIR, as a speaker in the Post-Graduation Career Session during the 263rd Graduation Preparation Program on Friday (28/8/2026). As the Founder of CV. Asher Aquarium and Beyond Aquarium, Khairudin shared his career journey and experience in building an ornamental fish business with prospective graduates.

Through the session, Khairudin encouraged participants to view their university experiences as valuable foundations that can be developed into career and entrepreneurial opportunities. He emphasized that building a future does not necessarily have to begin with something big, but rather with the courage to recognize opportunities and the consistency to go through the process.

Starting a Business During University

Khairudin’s entrepreneurial journey began while he was still pursuing his education. At a time when Serit betta fish were gaining popularity among the public, he recognized a business opportunity by starting to sell ornamental fish at Pasar Irian Barat.

His journey continued to develop. In 2002, Khairudin began experimenting with flowerhorn breeding by applying the knowledge he gained during his studies. His fieldwork experience in Tulungagung and Blitar also broadened his understanding of ornamental fish cultivation.

“Small steps taken consistently can become the beginning of a great journey,” said Khairudin.

Growing Through Adaptation

In 2013, Khairudin opened his first branch specializing in ornamental fish sales. As consumer needs evolved, his business expanded its services to include fish feed, pet shop supplies, aquascaping equipment, and various other supporting products.

A major challenge emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation encouraged Khairudin to adapt by strengthening the use of social media and online sales systems. This strategy allowed his business to reach a broader market while responding to changing consumer behavior.

For prospective graduates, Khairudin’s journey illustrates that academic knowledge needs to be complemented by adaptability and the courage to seize opportunities. Alumni involvement in sharing professional experiences also strengthens relevant learning and career preparation, in line with SDG 4: Quality Education.

Furthermore, the interaction between students and alumni during the Graduation Preparation Program provides an opportunity to establish networks and foster intergenerational collaboration. This spirit reflects SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collective contributions to strengthening graduates’ readiness for their professional journeys after completing their education at FPK UNAIR.
