Surabaya – The fisheries and marine sector offers career opportunities far beyond production. Aquaculture ponds, diverse fisheries commodities, and the development of resource- and innovation-based businesses provide broad opportunities for young people to build careers while creating new ventures.
This perspective was shared by Muhammad Syarif Satriyo Samudra, an alumnus of the Aquaculture Study Program, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Class of 2021, during the Potential and Challenges in the Fisheries and Marine Sector session as part of the 263rd FPK UNAIR Graduation Preparation Program on Friday (28/8/2026).
As a young entrepreneur engaged in seaweed cultivation, Satriyo encouraged prospective graduates to view their education as an important foundation for determining and developing their professional journeys.
“Studying at FPK UNAIR is part of our preparation to build our career path,” he said.
Turning Fisheries Potential into Opportunities
In his presentation, Satriyo emphasized that the fisheries and marine sector has extensive room for development. Opportunities can be found in various areas, ranging from aquaculture and the cultivation of diverse commodities to the creation of businesses and innovations based on the needs of communities and industries.
According to Satriyo, FPK UNAIR graduates have opportunities not only to pursue careers as professionals but also to create opportunities through entrepreneurship. The knowledge and experience gained during their studies serve as valuable capital for understanding potential, identifying needs, and developing solutions in the fisheries and marine sector.
This message aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education, which highlights the importance of quality education in preparing young people to enter the professional world. Higher education is not only a space for acquiring knowledge but also for developing adaptability, innovation, and the confidence to shape one’s future.
Furthermore, the involvement of alumni as speakers demonstrates the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions and alumni in broadening the perspectives of students and prospective graduates. This spirit supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening networks and collaboration to create broader and more sustainable impacts.
Not Only Seeking Jobs, but Creating Opportunities
Despite its considerable potential, Satriyo reminded the prospective graduates that career development and entrepreneurship also come with various challenges. The courage to take action, the ability to recognize opportunities, and the willingness to continuously learn and adapt are essential foundations for navigating the process.
“Work happily. Happiness is energy; the happier you are, the greater your energy,” he advised the prospective graduates.
Through the session, FPK UNAIR prospective graduates were encouraged to approach their future with optimism. The fisheries and marine sector is not merely a space to pursue professional careers, but also an avenue for young people to create opportunities and develop innovations based on the knowledge and expertise they have acquired throughout their studies.
