Work Schedule Planning Equips FPK UNAIR Students with Organizational Management Competencies

The 2026 Basic Student Management Skills Training (LKMM-TD) organized by the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK), Universitas Airlangga, continued to provide students with essential competencies for effective organizational management. One of the key sessions delivered on the first day of the program was Work Schedule Planning, presented by Putri Desi Wulan Sari, S.Pi., M.Si. The session emphasized the importance of systematic planning as a fundamental element in ensuring the success of student organization programs and activities.

During the session, participants learned that the success of an organization is not solely determined by the quality of its ideas but also by its ability to translate those ideas into structured and executable plans. Effective work schedule planning enables organizations to organize activities systematically, prioritize tasks, optimize available resources, and anticipate potential challenges during program implementation. Through comprehensive planning, organizations can improve efficiency and ensure that their objectives are achieved according to established targets.

Putri Desi explained that work schedule planning involves developing concrete steps to transform ideas into actionable programs. In student organizations, planning serves not only as a tool for organizing activities but also as a mechanism for strengthening leadership, management skills, creativity, self-development, and professional competencies. Therefore, understanding planning processes is crucial for students who aspire to become effective organizational leaders and managers.

The session also highlighted the relationship between leadership and management within organizations. Leadership focuses on maintaining members’ commitment to achieving organizational visions and goals, while management concentrates on developing organizational capacity to implement planned activities. Management encompasses organizational structuring, personnel arrangement, task delegation, communication systems, responsibility distribution, monitoring mechanisms, and problem-solving strategies. Together, leadership and management create a strong foundation for sustainable organizational performance.

Understanding Organizational Management Functions and Program Planning

A significant part of the session focused on introducing participants to the fundamental functions of organizational management. Students learned about key management functions, including planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, budgeting, and reporting. These interconnected functions play critical roles in ensuring that organizational programs are implemented effectively and efficiently. Understanding these management principles allows student organizations to design and execute activities that align with their objectives while maintaining accountability and sustainability.

In discussing work program development, Putri Desi outlined the stages organizations should undertake before implementing activities. These stages begin with problem identification and formulation, followed by problem classification, alternative solution generation, alternative analysis, decision-making, preliminary idea formulation, prioritization of work programs, program detailing, implementation, performance measurement, evaluation, and feedback development for future improvements. This systematic process ensures that organizational activities are based on thorough analysis and strategic consideration rather than spontaneous decision-making.

Participants were also reintroduced to the importance of Environmental Condition Analysis (AKL) and SWOT analysis as strategic planning tools. By identifying organizational strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, student organizations can formulate more effective strategies and make informed decisions when developing work programs. SWOT analysis helps organizations understand internal capabilities and external conditions, enabling them to create adaptive and realistic plans that address actual needs and challenges.

Furthermore, the session explored various organizational aspects that require analysis during the planning process. These include organizational background, statutes and bylaws, organizational structure, division of duties and authority, leadership aspects, administrative and financial systems, and both internal and external organizational relationships. According to Putri Desi, a comprehensive understanding of these aspects is essential for designing realistic and achievable work programs that align with organizational capacities and available resources.

Developing Effective Work Programs Through Strategic Time Management

The discussion then shifted toward decision-making and its role in developing quality work programs. Participants learned that successful programs result from well-considered decisions supported by accurate problem identification, data-driven analysis, creativity, alternative solution development, and effective problem-solving techniques. Organizations that are capable of integrating these elements into their planning processes are more likely to produce impactful and sustainable programs.

Putri Desi also emphasized that work plan formulation and committee establishment should consider several important factors, including organizational vision and mission, current and future trends, resource availability, organizational support capacity, and time management. By carefully evaluating these factors, organizations can create programs that are relevant, feasible, and aligned with stakeholder expectations. Time management, in particular, plays a crucial role in ensuring that every stage of a program is completed according to schedule and within available resources.

As part of the practical application of the material, participants were introduced to standard work program formats that include activity names, activity types, objectives, target beneficiaries, success indicators, funding sources, implementation schedules, and supporting information. Students also learned how to develop activity timelines that serve as implementation guides, helping ensure that every program phase proceeds according to established plans and deadlines.

Through the Work Schedule Planning session, LKMM-TD 2026 participants gained valuable insights into how organizational success depends not only on designing programs but also on managing time, resources, and implementation stages systematically. These competencies are essential for students as future leaders who will be responsible for managing organizations professionally and delivering meaningful contributions to society.

The session reflects Universitas Airlangga’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through strengthening students’ organizational management, leadership, and planning capacities. Additionally, the ability to develop structured and collaborative work programs contributes to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by enhancing cooperation, coordination, and teamwork in various student activities and initiatives.
