From Comfort Zone to Leadership: The Journey of FPK Unair’s BEM Vice President 2025

Bagikan

For Farrel Bhanu Mahardhika, a student of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Airlangga (FPK Unair), university life began as a quiet and simple journey. He found peace in solitude, living as an introvert who preferred going straight home after classes rather than socializing on campus. “My comfort zone was not meeting many people,” he reflected. From the very beginning, Farrel had no intention of joining student organizations, believing that leadership and campus politics were not his path. His plan was simple—study, graduate, and keep a low profile. Yet, as life often unfolds, unexpected turns sometimes lead us to discover a stronger version of ourselves.

In 2024, a decision changed everything. Farrel decided to take a leap of faith by joining the Student Executive Board (Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa or BEM). What started as a small step toward trying something new soon became a transformative journey. Midway through the year, an offer arrived—an opportunity to become the Vice President of BEM FPK Unair 2025. The role required him to step far beyond his comfort zone: leading peers, communicating with many people, and representing his faculty in various forums. It was a challenge that demanded confidence and courage, something that initially seemed out of reach for someone who once preferred the quiet corner of campus life. “At first, I was overwhelmed with doubt and fear,” Farrel admitted. “I kept asking myself—am I capable of this? Am I ready?”

That internal struggle eventually led him to a realization: opportunities do not come twice, and personal growth often begins when one chooses to face discomfort. Accepting the responsibility as Vice President of BEM FPK Unair 2025 became a defining moment in his academic and personal journey. With determination, he embraced his new role, aiming to elevate the image of the Marine Science and Technology program and to strengthen the impact of BEM FPK Unair within the faculty and the wider university community. His mission extended beyond administrative duties—it was about building collaboration, inspiring fellow students, and fostering meaningful change within FPK Unair.

For Farrel, holding this leadership position is not about prestige or recognition, but about transformation—both personal and collective. It is a story of overcoming fear, learning to adapt, and stepping forward to serve. Through his journey, he demonstrates that leadership is not confined to extroverts or those naturally comfortable in the spotlight. “Becoming Vice President is a chance for me to grow, to learn how to listen, to understand others, and to lead with purpose,” he said. What began as an attempt to escape the crowd has now turned into an experience of standing before it—speaking, guiding, and inspiring.

Farrel’s story stands as a reflection of how FPK Unair continues to cultivate not only academic excellence but also character development among its students. His journey reminds us that growth often begins the moment we dare to leave our comfort zones. Through courage and commitment, even the most reserved individuals can emerge as leaders capable of shaping positive change—proving that every quiet soul has the potential to lead with strength, empathy, and vision.
