Surabaya – The first day of the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB) 2026 at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga featured a session titled “History, Achievements, and the Faculty’s Future Vision” on Wednesday (August 5, 2026). As part of the FPK Universitas Airlangga PKKMB 2026 program, the session introduced new students to the faculty’s historical development, academic accomplishments, and strategic direction for the future, providing them with a strong foundation as they begin their university journey.
The session was conducted simultaneously on different floors of the faculty building, with each floor featuring one distinguished speaker: Prof. Dr. Sri Subekti, drh., DEA., Prof. Dr. Gunanti Mahasri, Ir., M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Ir. Kismiyati, M.Si. Through their presentations, students gained valuable insights into the institution’s evolution and its commitment to academic excellence.
Exploring the History and Development of the Faculty
During the session, the speakers explained that the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine at Universitas Airlangga originated from the Undergraduate Aquatic Cultivation Study Program, which was initially established under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine before becoming an independent faculty in 2008. As higher education continued to evolve, the faculty expanded its academic offerings, including the transformation of the Aquatic Cultivation program into the Undergraduate Aquaculture Study Program, the establishment of the Undergraduate Fisheries Product Technology Study Program, and the development of postgraduate programs that further strengthened its academic capacity.
The new students were also introduced to the faculty’s leadership journey over the years, highlighting how each administration has contributed to shaping the institution’s academic culture, governance, and long-term development strategy.
Academic Achievements as a Foundation for Student Success
Beyond its history, the session showcased the faculty’s academic achievements and international recognition. FPK Universitas Airlangga currently offers four study programs, three of which have received international accreditation from the Accreditation in Engineering, Computer Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics (ASIIN). These accomplishments are supported by an extensive network of international collaborations, including double-degree programs that provide students with opportunities to participate in student exchanges, collaborative research, and international internships.
The faculty also consistently organizes two international conferences: the International Conference on Fisheries and Marine Sciences (INCOFIMS) and the International Conference on Biotechnology and Food Sciences (INCOBIFS). These conferences serve as important platforms for researchers, academics, and practitioners to present scientific findings, expand professional networks, and strengthen international collaboration in fisheries, marine sciences, biotechnology, and food sciences.
Preparing Future Leaders in Fisheries and Marine Sciences
Through this session, new students not only learned about the history of FPK Universitas Airlangga but also recognized that they are now part of an institution committed to continuous growth and academic excellence. Understanding the faculty’s achievements and future aspirations is expected to foster a strong sense of belonging while motivating students to contribute to its ongoing success through innovation, research, and community engagement.
The session also reflects the faculty’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing high-quality higher education, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through the advancement of research and technological innovation in fisheries and marine sciences, SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by preparing graduates dedicated to sustainable marine resource management, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through the expansion of academic and research collaborations with national and international institutions.
