The potential of Indonesia’s marine resources was introduced to students through an academic session on Indonesian wild brown algae and its opportunities for further development. The session encouraged students to view marine resources not merely as commodities, but as sources of innovation that can be explored through science, research, and technology.
The first session was delivered by Dr. nat. techn. Muhamad Nur Ghoyatul Amin, S.TP., M.P., M.Sc. through a presentation entitled “Biorefineries of Indonesian Wild Brown Algae.” In his presentation, Dr. Ghoyatul introduced students to the potential of Indonesia’s brown algae while encouraging the younger generation to develop a broader perspective on marine resources. Brown algae was presented not only as a marine commodity, but also as a resource with diverse opportunities for development through scientific research and innovation.
The material was delivered in an engaging manner to help students better understand the potential of brown algae and its possible applications. The session also encouraged young people to take an active role in optimizing Indonesia’s marine resources rather than becoming merely consumers of these resources. “The younger generation needs to maximize existing potential and contribute to optimizing Indonesia’s marine potential,” said Dr. Ghoyatul.
The presentation was followed by an interactive discussion. Two students raised questions directly related to the topic, particularly about how fucoidan can be produced and the benefits of brown algae. The questions reflected the students’ interest in exploring how seaweed can be processed and utilized through research and technological approaches.
Through this session, students gained knowledge about brown algae while also being introduced to a broader perspective on marine resources as a space for innovation. This approach supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing contextual scientific knowledge and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by fostering awareness of marine resources and the importance of their sustainable utilization.
