FPK Januari 4th-Student Achivement
The FPK UNAIR microalgae innovation has achieved international recognition as Team Algavolt secured a Bronze Medal at IPITEX 2026 in Thailand. Specifically, students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga showcased their excellence in this global exposition. The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) hosted the event at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) from January 4th to 9th, 2026. Furthermore, this victory highlights the competitive edge of our marine biotechnology research.
FPK UNAIR Microalgae Innovation for Smart Cities
Team Algavolt presented a project titled “A Bio Intelligent Facade Integrating Microalgae and IoT for Energy Independent Smart Cities”. In essence, they integrated aquatic biotechnology with Internet of Things (IoT) systems. These facade panels use microalgae to sequester carbon emissions and generate renewable energy. Therefore, this FPK UNAIR microalgae innovation provides a sustainable solution for energy-independent urban development as outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Moreover, the IoT integration allows for automated, real-time biomass monitoring. As a result, the system maintains the highest efficiency in pollution absorption. Thus, this research proves that the fisheries sector plays a vital role in supporting future green infrastructure and climate resilience.
Global Competition and Recognition
The journey toward winning the medal was challenging, as the team competed against 1,036 participants from 24 nations. However, the students consistently demonstrated the superiority of their technology to international judges. Finally, on the fifth day, the jury announced Team Algavolt as a winner in the Green Technology category. Andini Carolina, a team member, stated that this experience motivates them to create more meaningful innovations for the global community.
Additionally, this success supports the faculty’s commitment to SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Similarly, this international collaboration strengthens SDG 17 (Partnerships for The Goals). Therefore, the university continues to encourage students to participate in global exhibitions to expand their scientific impact.
