On Saturday, May 17, 2025, the Islamic Spirituality Division of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga, launched its “Islamic Youth Podcast” program, focusing on educating students about non-halal ingredients and foods labeled as halal but potentially containing forbidden elements. This edition featured Mas Davano, a representative from the Universitas Airlangga Halal Center, who delivered a thorough and practical presentation on the topic.
The podcast, moderated by the Islamic Spirituality Division team, highlighted critical insights into halal certification and the hidden risks within food products. Mas Davano explained that while a product may carry a halal label, there could still be ingredients or production processes that violate Islamic dietary law, such as cross-contamination or preservatives derived from non-halal sources. This information is particularly relevant for Muslim students engaged in fisheries and marine studies, who need to be vigilant about the halal integrity of their consumption.
Mas Davano emphasized that understanding halal food extends beyond merely checking the label. “It is essential to comprehend the production process, ingredients, and food management practices,” he stated, urging the audience to develop critical awareness and halal literacy. He highlighted the importance of informed decision-making in selecting food that aligns with syariah principles, ensuring both ethical and religious compliance.
The podcast also included practical tips for identifying truly halal and thayyib ingredients, guiding participants on recognizing hidden haram contents in everyday food products. The interactive discussion was met with enthusiastic responses from students participating online, fostering an engaging and informative learning experience. Akhsan Nurrizky, Chair of the Islamic Spirituality Division FPK Unair, noted that the Islamic Youth Podcast serves as a strategic platform for enhancing Islamic knowledge while encouraging students to critically assess current halal food issues. “We hope this initiative contributes to developing a generation that is not only academically competent but also conscientious in maintaining the halal integrity of their diet,” he added.
Available on Oase Unair’s social media channels, the podcast represents the Islamic Spirituality Division’s ongoing commitment to cultivating an educational ecosystem that promotes Islamic values and halal awareness, reinforcing Universitas Airlangga’s vision of integrating faith-based principles into academic and community life.
