KAKEMA RnD Department Initiates PRISMA 1.0 as the First Step in a Student Aquatic Research Series Focusing on Fish Nutrition, Reproduction, and Disease

The Research and Development (RnD) Department of Kajian Keilmiahan Mahasiswa (KAKEMA) officially initiated PRISMA 1.0 (Pengembangan Riset Ilmiah dan Sains Mahasiswa Akuatik) as the first step in a series of student research development programs focusing on fish nutrition, reproduction, and disease. The program was held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Room B 3.02, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga, starting at 4:00 PM WIB. Organized as an academic initiative for Aquaculture students, PRISMA 1.0 aimed to strengthen students’ understanding and scientific competence in fisheries and aquaculture research, particularly in supporting sustainable aquaculture development. The event was attended by 35 second- and fourth-semester students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK UNAIR), especially those currently studying foundational and advanced aquaculture subjects.

As the opening agenda of a long-term student research program, PRISMA 1.0 was designed to encourage academic curiosity and research-oriented thinking among aquaculture students. Through this activity, the RnD Department of KAKEMA sought to provide students with broader insights into current scientific issues in aquaculture, including fish nutrition management, reproductive systems, and fish health challenges. These topics are considered highly relevant to modern aquaculture practices, where productivity and sustainability depend not only on cultivation techniques but also on scientific innovation and research-based approaches. By involving undergraduate students from early semesters, the program also aimed to build a strong foundation for future academic and research development within the Aquaculture Study Program of Universitas Airlangga.

The activity featured Dita Wahyuningsih as the main speaker, who delivered a comprehensive presentation on fish nutrition and its essential role in supporting fish growth, feed efficiency, and disease resistance. During the session, she explained that proper nutritional management significantly influences aquaculture productivity and organism health. The speaker also highlighted the importance of feed additives such as vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and natural extracts in improving fish growth performance, strengthening immune responses, and increasing nutrient absorption efficiency. Furthermore, she discussed recent innovations in aquaculture nutrition, including advancements in feed technology and microbiome utilization to enhance fish health and farming sustainability. These developments demonstrate that nutrition management is not only associated with growth optimization but also contributes to environmentally sustainable aquaculture systems and long-term fisheries resilience.

In addition to nutrition, the presentation also covered fish reproductive systems and several important factors affecting reproductive success in aquaculture activities. Environmental conditions, feed quality, and broodstock physiological status were emphasized as key aspects in supporting successful fish reproduction. The speaker further elaborated on various fish diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites, along with preventive and treatment strategies commonly applied in aquaculture practices. These approaches include water quality management, the provision of high-quality feed, and the utilization of natural immunostimulant agents to improve fish resistance against diseases. Through these discussions, participants gained a broader understanding of how integrated fish health management can contribute to more effective and sustainable aquaculture production systems.

The event was conducted in a structured and interactive manner, beginning with the opening session, followed by material presentations, and concluding with an engaging discussion and question-and-answer session. One of the participants, Taura Lingga, raised a question regarding the gap between the concept of blue transformation in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the no poverty goal, and the current socioeconomic conditions of coastal communities that still face welfare challenges. Responding to this issue, the speaker explained that one practical solution lies in implementing community service programs that optimize local resource potential. Programs such as PKM-PM were mentioned as strategic platforms for empowering coastal communities and improving economic stability sustainably. Overall, PRISMA 1.0 was successfully conducted and is expected to become the beginning of a continuous academic development program for students of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga.
