The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK), Universitas Airlangga, continues its commitment to enhancing student capacity through the implementation of the 2026 Basic Student Management Skills Training (LKMM-TD). One of the fundamental sessions delivered during the first day of the program on June 6, 2026, at Building C of FPK UNAIR focused on Environmental Condition Analysis, presented by Luthfiana Aprilianita Sari, S.Pi., M.Si. The session equipped participants with essential knowledge and practical approaches to assessing organizational environments before designing work programs and student-led initiatives.
Environmental condition analysis serves as a crucial foundation in organizational planning because successful programs should not be based solely on ideas or assumptions. Instead, they must be developed according to actual needs, challenges, and opportunities within the surrounding environment. Through this session, students learned how a comprehensive understanding of internal and external conditions can improve decision-making processes and increase the likelihood of program success. The training encouraged participants to adopt a systematic approach to identifying factors that may influence organizational performance and project implementation.
During her presentation, Luthfiana explained that environmental condition analysis is a process of observing and examining situations in a detailed, structured, and objective manner before carrying out a program or activity. This process enables organizations to identify both internal and external factors that may affect outcomes. Internal factors include organizational strengths and weaknesses, while external factors consist of opportunities and threats originating from outside the organization. Understanding these factors allows student organizations to formulate strategies that maximize available resources while minimizing potential risks.
The session also highlighted the strategic benefits of environmental condition analysis in organizational decision-making. By conducting thorough assessments, organizations can recognize their capabilities and limitations, align programs with stakeholder needs, anticipate challenges during implementation, and prevent failures caused by inadequate planning. A comprehensive analysis helps ensure that work programs remain relevant, adaptive, and responsive to dynamic environmental conditions. Consequently, organizations can design initiatives that generate greater impact and provide meaningful contributions to both members and the wider community.
To facilitate practical understanding, Luthfiana introduced several methods commonly used to analyze environmental conditions. One of the most widely applied approaches is SWOT analysis, which examines Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Through this framework, students learned how to identify organizational advantages that can be optimized, weaknesses that require improvement, opportunities that can be leveraged, and threats that should be anticipated. The method provides a simple yet effective tool for evaluating organizational readiness and developing strategic responses to various circumstances.
To further strengthen participants’ understanding of SWOT analysis, the session incorporated a case study involving the proposed implementation of “AquaPreneur Bootcamp,” an entrepreneurship training program designed for fisheries students. Participants were invited to identify internal and external factors influencing the program’s potential success. These factors included organizational experience, alumni support, partnership opportunities, committee experience limitations, and relatively low student interest in entrepreneurship. Through the exercise, students gained practical experience in applying analytical concepts to real-world organizational scenarios.
In addition to the entrepreneurship case study, participants were assigned an analytical exercise related to the implementation of a fisheries field practicum program. Through guided discussions, students examined possible strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that could emerge throughout the activity. This interactive approach encouraged participants to develop critical and strategic thinking skills while learning how to formulate solutions to organizational challenges. Such exercises emphasized the importance of evidence-based planning and adaptive management in student activities.
Through the Environmental Condition Analysis session, LKMM-TD 2026 participants gained not only theoretical knowledge regarding organizational planning but also practical competencies in situational assessment and strategic decision-making. These skills are expected to become valuable assets for students as they design data-driven and needs-based work programs capable of delivering optimal benefits to organizations and society. By fostering analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities, the training contributes to the development of future leaders who are prepared to address complex challenges in both academic and professional environments.
This learning session also reflects Universitas Airlangga’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the enhancement of students’ critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving competencies. Furthermore, the emphasis on environmental condition analysis aligns with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by encouraging students to understand the importance of collaboration, stakeholder mapping, and strategic partnerships in achieving successful program outcomes.
