Surabaya – The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continued the JALADHI 2026 series through the One Day As Who You Are program on Thursday (August 6). Held within the FPK UNAIR campus environment, the activity provided new students with a practice-based learning experience, allowing them to gain first-hand insight into academic life, laboratory activities, and student culture before officially beginning their university studies.
The program began with an opening session, followed by the singing of Indonesia Raya and the Airlangga Hymn, as well as an introduction to the organizing committee. These activities served as an initial step in establishing a closer connection between the committee and new students. Participants then took part in a series of activities designed to provide an authentic representation of their future experiences as students at FPK UNAIR.
Exploring Academic Life Through Direct Experience
New students participated in a mini practicum on the fundamentals of aquaculture organized in collaboration with the Student Scientific Study Group (KAKEMA). Through this activity, participants were introduced to the basic principles of aquatic farming while gaining an initial understanding of the learning processes and practical activities they will encounter throughout their academic journey.
The experience continued with a mini practicum on fisheries raw materials facilitated by the Fisheries Processing Club (FPC). Participants were introduced to various fisheries commodities and explored their potential for processing, providing an overview of fisheries product utilization as one of the academic fields developed at FPK UNAIR.
The activities became increasingly interactive through fisheries and marine-themed fun games designed to strengthen student bonding while developing communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. New students also participated in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the Marine Affairs Motion, which served as a platform for developing critical thinking, presenting arguments, and discussing strategic issues related to the fisheries and marine sectors.
As preparation for their future academic activities, participants were also invited to visit the Anatomy and Aquaculture Laboratory and the Microbiology Laboratory. Accompanied by laboratory staff and practicum assistants, they were introduced to various learning facilities and gained an overview of the practical activities they will undertake during their studies at FPK UNAIR.
Hammerhead Shark Officially Becomes the 2026 Cohort Identity
The program continued with speeches and the election of the cohort coordinator, known as koordinator tingkat (komting), as an initial step toward fostering leadership among new students. The election process involved a panel assessment consisting of the President of BEM FPK UNAIR, the coordinator of the youngest existing cohort, and all new students of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Airlangga. Based on the assessment results and collective agreement, Muhammad Samir Addegel was elected as the coordinator of the 2026 cohort. The elected coordinator is expected to serve as a communicative and responsible bridge among students while coordinating the new cohort throughout their academic journey at FPK UNAIR.
The highlight of the event was the official designation of the new cohort identity for FPK UNAIR students in 2026. Following a voting process involving all participants, Hammerhead Shark was officially selected as the name of the 2026 cohort. The identity is expected to represent resilience, solidarity, and a commitment to marine ecosystem sustainability, values that the students will carry throughout their journey as members of the FPK UNAIR academic community.
Fika, one of the new students from the Aquaculture Study Program, said that the activity gave her a clearer picture of university life at FPK UNAIR.
“I now have a better understanding of what it is like to be an FPK UNAIR student. This activity has made me even more excited to learn, grow, and experience university life together with my cohort,” she said.
Through One Day As Who You Are, JALADHI 2026 not only introduced new students to the academic environment but also provided a space for building camaraderie, discovering their cohort identity, and developing their readiness to begin their journey as members of the FPK UNAIR academic community.
The activity also reflects FPK UNAIR’s commitment to supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education through experiential learning that strengthens students’ competencies from the beginning of their academic journey. Furthermore, collaboration among student organizations, laboratories, educational staff, and the wider academic community in organizing the program aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, emphasizing the importance of synergy among various stakeholders in creating a collaborative, innovative, and sustainable higher education ecosystem.
