In the continuation of the talk show “Kuliah ke Luar Negeri: Real Talk, No Flex,” Mohamad Akmal Alwi Husein elaborated on his experience in obtaining the MoE Scholarship from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and adapting academically at National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU).
He explained that the scholarship selection process does not solely focus on GPA, but also values academic consistency, research experience, English proficiency, and the relevance of the proposed study plan to the intended field. A structured and realistic study plan was highlighted as a key factor in the selection process.
Since his undergraduate years at FPK UNAIR, the speaker actively engaged in research activities and academic capacity development. He emphasized the importance of maintaining communication with academic supervisors and carefully preparing administrative documents, including recommendation letters and academic portfolios.
The academic environment at NTOU requires students to actively participate in discussions, laboratory research, and international collaborations. The focus on Marine Biotechnology and Ecology Environmental Sustainability contributes significantly to the advancement of sustainable marine sciences, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 14.
Cultural and academic system adaptation became initial challenges. The research-based learning system and high academic demands required strong time management skills and critical thinking abilities.
Nevertheless, the experience greatly broadened global perspectives and enhanced academic competencies. Talk show participants assessed that the real-life insights provided a clearer and more measurable picture of pursuing graduate studies abroad.
Through this initiative, FPK UNAIR continues to encourage students to seize global opportunities and build international networks in fisheries and marine sciences.
