Surabaya – PRISMA 2.0 Aquaculture 4.0 became the central theme of an academic activity organized by the Aquatic Science Research and Development Forum (PRISMA), under the Research and Development Division (R&D) of Kajian Keilmiahan Mahasiswa (KAKEMA), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK), Universitas Airlangga, on Friday (19/6/2026). Held at Room B.304 of FPK UNAIR, the event featured Prof. Dr. Akhmad Taufiq Mukti, S.Pi., M.Si. as the main speaker, who delivered insights on environmental dynamics, system development, and technological advancement in modern aquaculture.
The program was attended by 24 students, predominantly from the second and sixth semesters of FPK UNAIR. Through PRISMA 2.0, participants were encouraged to explore current challenges in the aquaculture sector while also identifying research and innovation opportunities that can be applied to support sustainable fish farming practices. The discussion emphasized the importance of bridging academic knowledge with real-world industrial needs, particularly in addressing productivity and environmental sustainability in aquaculture systems.
In his presentation, Prof. Taufiq explained that modern aquaculture faces a range of persistent challenges, including suboptimal organism growth, high feed conversion ratio (FCR), disease outbreaks, and fluctuating environmental conditions that directly affect production performance. According to him, these issues require the implementation of more efficient, adaptive, and technology-driven aquaculture systems capable of responding to rapidly changing environmental and economic conditions.
He further introduced the concept of Aquaculture 4.0, which integrates digital technologies into aquaculture systems. Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data analytics, and automation systems are considered essential tools for improving production efficiency while ensuring environmental sustainability. These technologies enable real-time monitoring, predictive analysis, and data-driven decision-making in aquaculture operations, ultimately contributing to more resilient and productive systems.
“Smart technology is no longer an option, but a necessity to ensure food system resilience and aquatic ecosystem sustainability. Therefore, the younger generation must prepare themselves to adapt to rapid technological advancement,” Prof. Taufiq stated.
Beyond technological development, Prof. Taufiq also encouraged students to actively engage in research aligned with current aquaculture industry needs. He highlighted several potential research topics, including IoT-based water quality monitoring systems, the development of local biofilters for Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), and innovative technologies aimed at improving aquaculture productivity and sustainability. These areas, he noted, offer significant opportunities for academic contribution and practical application in the field.
He also emphasized that meaningful research is not necessarily about finding entirely new topics, but about discovering new perspectives on unresolved problems. “The goal of research is not only to create something new, but to find new angles to solve existing problems. That is where scientific contribution truly lies,” he added.
Throughout the session, students demonstrated strong enthusiasm, engaging actively in discussions and raising questions regarding the future of aquaculture development, technological integration, and research opportunities. The interactive dialogue created a dynamic academic environment that strengthened students’ understanding of emerging trends in aquaculture innovation.
The Chairperson of KAKEMA stated that PRISMA 2.0 is designed as a platform to enhance students’ scientific literacy and research capacity, particularly in aquaculture and aquatic technology fields. “Through PRISMA 2.0, we hope students not only understand technological developments in aquaculture but are also motivated to generate ideas and research that can address future challenges in the fisheries sector,” said Aditya.
Through its implementation, PRISMA 2.0 reflects KAKEMA’s commitment to strengthening academic capacity and research culture within the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga. The program is expected to serve as an initial step for students to actively contribute to innovation in Indonesia’s aquaculture sector.
This activity also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing a platform for academic enrichment and scientific learning in aquaculture technology. Discussions on sustainable farming systems and aquatic environmental management also contribute to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Furthermore, the collaboration between students and academics in this scientific forum reflects the spirit of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening research networks and promoting sustainable innovation.
