Prof. Yu-Hung Lin at FPK UNAIR Highlights Molecular Nutrition and Sustainable Aquafeeds as the Future of Global Fisheries

Surabaya – Achieving sustainable aquaculture requires more than increasing production; it depends on the ability to manage resources responsibly through scientific innovation. This message was at the center of a guest lecture delivered by Prof. Dr. Yu-Hung Lin from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST), Taiwan, at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), on Thursday (June 4, 2026).

The lecture, which formed part of the academic visit by the NPUST delegation, was titled “What Fish Eat, What We Eat: Molecular Nutrition and the Future of Sustainable Aquafeeds.” The event attracted students, lecturers, and members of the FPK UNAIR academic community who were eager to learn about the latest developments in fish nutrition and sustainable feed technologies.

The session emphasized the interconnected relationship between fish nutrition, environmental health, and global food security. According to Prof. Lin, the growing global demand for protein will position aquaculture as one of the most important food production sectors in the future. However, increased production must be achieved responsibly to avoid placing excessive pressure on aquatic ecosystems.

Through the field of molecular nutrition, researchers are now able to better understand how specific nutrients influence fish growth, health, metabolism, and feed utilization efficiency. Such knowledge provides a scientific foundation for developing feed formulations that are more effective, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable. Prof. Lin stressed that the success of future aquaculture industries will no longer be measured solely by production volume, but also by how efficiently resources are utilized while minimizing environmental impacts.

One of the topics that generated significant interest among participants was the development of alternative feed ingredients for aquaculture. The industry continues to rely heavily on conventional feed resources, many of which face increasing supply limitations due to rising global demand. Drawing on research conducted at NPUST, Prof. Lin demonstrated how innovative feed solutions can be developed using more sustainable raw materials. These approaches not only reduce production costs but also contribute to lowering the environmental footprint of aquaculture operations.

He explained that the concept of sustainable aquafeeds has become a key strategy for advancing modern aquaculture systems. By optimizing feed formulations, producers can improve productivity while maintaining water quality and ecosystem health. For FPK UNAIR students, the lecture provided valuable insights into the roles of nutrition science, biotechnology, and feed innovation in addressing global fisheries challenges.

Beyond presenting current research developments, Prof. Lin encouraged students to continue strengthening their academic capabilities and research skills. He emphasized that young scientists will play a critical role in developing innovative solutions to challenges facing the fisheries sector, ranging from production efficiency to environmental sustainability.

The interactive discussion session reflected strong student interest in emerging aquaculture technologies. Participants actively engaged in conversations about fish nutrition research, feed formulation strategies, and opportunities for future academic collaboration. The presence of an internationally recognized scholar such as Prof. Lin further demonstrated FPK UNAIR’s commitment to integrating global perspectives into the learning experience and exposing students to international advancements in fisheries science.

The guest lecture also supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Discussions on sustainable aquaculture innovation contribute to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by supporting global food security, while sustainable feed development aligns with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through more efficient and responsible resource use. Efforts to minimize environmental impacts in aquaculture further support SDG 14 (Life Below Water), while the academic collaboration between FPK UNAIR and NPUST reflects SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through international cooperation in education and research.

Through this guest lecture, FPK UNAIR once again reaffirmed its commitment to delivering internationally oriented education and cutting-edge scientific knowledge. The faculty hopes that the insights gained from the session will equip students to contribute to the development of an innovative, productive, and sustainable fisheries sector in the years ahead.
