In July and September 2025, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) Universitas Airlangga carried out a community service program titled SALMON (Social and Learning Activity with Morality for Nation). Organized under the Social Community Department of BEM FPK UNAIR, this program exemplifies the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, emphasizing education, health, environment, and economic empowerment. Through a series of integrated activities, SALMON 2025 reflects the students’ dedication to creating tangible social impact and supporting sustainable community development.
The program covered four major aspects. The educational aspect focused on teaching and public awareness initiatives, introducing topics related to fisheries and sustainable livelihoods. The health aspect included public exercise sessions, mosquito larvae monitoring, and collaboration with local health centers to promote community well-being. The environmental aspect emphasized sustainability through waste bank establishment, cultivation of herbal plants, and the creation and dissemination of eco-enzymes to reduce household waste. Meanwhile, the economic aspect was realized through financial management workshops and training sessions on producing smoked-fish-based products such as shredded fish (abon) and chili paste (sambal), in collaboration with the Fisheries Processing Club.
Led by Reviyanti Trezatalia, a 2023 student from the Aquaculture Study Program, SALMON 2025 was supported by six divisions: Public Relations (BPI), Economy, Health, Environment, Education, and Visual Media. The program took place over approximately 29 days in Penatarsewu Village, Sidoarjo, followed by a two-day extension in Banyuwangi. The student team collaborated directly with the local community to introduce innovative, practical, and sustainable approaches that can enhance the villagers’ economic resilience and environmental awareness.
Penatarsewu Village in Sidoarjo Regency was selected as the main location due to its abundant yet underutilized local resources, particularly its high production of smoked fish. This potential inspired students to design programs that could enhance human resource capacity while optimizing local fisheries products. Through a combination of workshops, training sessions, and social initiatives, the SALMON team encouraged community members to process and market their fish-based products more effectively, strengthening local entrepreneurship and promoting environmentally friendly practices.
The final phase of the SALMON 2025 program took place in Banyuwangi, where all committee members and 40 additional participants from FIKKIA Banyuwangi joined a hybrid coralology seminar focusing on coral reef transplantation. The following day, participants directly implemented coral transplantation activities in Bangsring, a well-known coastal conservation area. These activities not only enhanced students’ understanding of marine conservation but also demonstrated the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and local communities. Through this program, SALMON 2025 successfully fostered synergy between students and society to advance sustainable economic growth and promote inclusive development that benefits both people and the environment.
