Surabaya, October 18, 2025 – The Fisheries Product Technology Student Association (HIMATEKHIKAN) of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) successfully held the Fisheries Product Technology Open House 2025 on Saturday, within the faculty premises. The event aimed to provide hands-on experiences for high school students (or equivalent) to explore campus life in the Fisheries Product Technology Study Program (THP). With a limited quota of 50 participants, the program offered participants the opportunity to directly experience what it feels like to be a THP student while learning about the diverse aspects of fisheries product science.
The event began with an introductory presentation about the study program, covering key topics such as career prospects, learning outcomes, and the academic culture at FPK UNAIR. Participants were introduced to both academic and non-academic activities that shape the daily life of THP students. The session provided a comprehensive understanding of the study environment, academic expectations, and opportunities for innovation in the field of fisheries product technology. This orientation helped participants gain insights into how science, technology, and sustainability are integrated into the curriculum to prepare students for global challenges in the fisheries industry.
Following the presentation, participants joined a faculty tour guided by active THP students. The tour showcased key facilities, including the fish processing laboratories, product display rooms, lecture halls, and practical work areas, which are essential to the learning process in the study program. This interactive segment allowed visitors to engage directly with students and lecturers, asking questions about the facilities, research projects, and the overall academic experience. The highlight of the day came during the mangrove syrup-making workshop, where participants learned to create processed products from mangrove resources—demonstrating the importance of sustainable coastal resource utilization. This activity received strong appreciation, particularly from Prof. Dr. Endang Dewi Masithah, Ir., MP, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, who attended the event and expressed her full support. Her presence underscored the significance of the Open House as part of FPK UNAIR’s ongoing public education and outreach efforts.
The practical sessions continued with basic fish filleting training, conducted in the processing laboratory. Participants showed great enthusiasm as they practiced correct and hygienic fish filleting techniques under the guidance of THP students and instructors. This hands-on session not only introduced participants to basic fish processing skills but also emphasized food safety and the optimal utilization of fishery products. The active participation and curiosity of the students—reflected through their eagerness to ask questions and try the techniques themselves—demonstrated the event’s success in sparking new interest and awareness about the fisheries industry among young learners.
To conclude the event, participants enjoyed a creative showcase featuring performances by THP students, including music, dance, and multimedia art presentations, all reflecting campus life and the spirit of unity at FPK UNAIR. The cheerful atmosphere and sense of camaraderie left a lasting impression on both guests and organizers. Overall, the THP Open House 2025 delivered significant benefits both externally and internally. Externally, it enhanced the visibility and reputation of the Fisheries Product Technology Program among prospective students and partner schools. Internally, it strengthened collaboration among students, lecturers, and faculty leadership, serving as a valuable learning experience in educational event management and science communication.
