On Saturday (August 16, 2025), the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga, held an orientation event for new students of the Fisheries Product Technology (THP) study program. The activity aimed to introduce the academic environment, foster a sense of togetherness, responsibility, and camaraderie among new students, as well as provide an overview of graduate profiles and scientific prospects within the study program. Jalasena 2025 began with attendance registration and group assignments, followed by welcoming remarks delivered by the committee chairperson, Dwi Agustina Setiawan, and Hilal Syahrul Akbar, the head of the Fisheries Product Technology Student Association.
The series of orientation events featured presentations by several speakers designed to help students better understand the study program they have chosen. Three main sessions were conducted on the first day. The first material, Introduction to Fisheries Product Technology Department, was presented by Dr. Rr. Juni Triastuti, S.Pi., M.Si. Students actively listened and took notes, showing great enthusiasm through numerous questions during the discussion session. The second material, Link and Learn, was delivered by alumnus Tegar Pambudi Sulistyo, S.Pi., who shared his experience working in the fisheries sector and explained internship opportunities for students. The third session featured Vito Reyner Adriananda, a recent graduate, who discussed his experience completing his final project and provided practical tips for a productive academic journey.
After the presentation sessions, participants engaged in group discussions with their mentors through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to create posters that would later be presented on the second day. This session encouraged teamwork and creativity, as students collaborated to design posters that reflected their learning experiences. The first day concluded with a material summary test and final attendance check, marking a successful start to Jalasena 2025.
The second day of the orientation took place on Friday (August 22, 2025) at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga. Compared to the first day, the atmosphere was more relaxed and interactive. The event began with registration and opening remarks, followed by student presentations of their Project-Based Learning posters. Each group discussed specific issues related to their assigned topics, analyzed the problems scientifically, and presented their findings through the posters. This session was designed to strengthen teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among new students.
The next agenda featured a presentation from the Fisheries Processing Club (FPC) on the process of making mangrove syrup. The session broadened students’ perspectives on how mangrove fruit, which is often overlooked, can be processed into consumable products such as syrup. Afterward, the event continued with the Public Test for Class Commander Candidates (Komting), which assessed leadership potential and problem-solving abilities. The test included an oration session and question rounds from senior class commanders and new students.
In the final session, all participants took part in a practical activity on mangrove syrup processing, marking the conclusion of Jalasena 2025. The enthusiasm of the new students was evident as they actively participated in every step—from peeling, cleaning, cutting, blending, to cooking the mangrove fruit into syrup. The resulting syrup had a distinctive brownish color with a sweet and slightly sour taste, showcasing creativity and teamwork in practice. Through these two days of orientation, students not only gained academic insights but also built strong connections and a sense of belonging as part of the Fisheries Product Technology community.
