On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held an important discussion with the Yogyakarta Chapter of the Alumni Association (IKA) FPK. The discussion was led by Mr. Agus Sutiyono, S.Sos., M.M., and attended by Mr. Hardy Sapto from CPP Prebiotic and Mr. Didit from Bank BRI, both alumni of the Aquaculture Program, class of 2005.
This meeting aimed to evaluate the faculty’s current programs and design strategies for its improvement to better align with the needs of both alumni and students. Several key points were highlighted during the discussion.
Challenges of Alumni Opting Out of Fisheries Careers
One of the primary concerns discussed was the issue of some FPK UNAIR alumni not pursuing careers in the fisheries sector. Addressing this requires strategic actions to increase interest and motivation among students to explore the sector’s potential.
Inspirational Webinars for Sixth-Semester Students
As a solution, the discussion proposed conducting webinars featuring alumni with expertise in the fisheries field. This program is targeted at sixth-semester students to prepare them for entering the workforce. These webinars aim to provide career insights and inspiring experiences that motivate students.
Promoting Study Programs in Remote Areas
The discussion also emphasized the importance of alumni involvement in promoting FPK UNAIR study programs to remote areas. Many potential students in these regions remain unaware of the programs offered by the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences. Increased promotional efforts are expected to enhance the faculty’s appeal and outreach.
ALUMNI TEACHING Program
One innovative recommendation from the discussion was the ALUMNI TEACHING program. This initiative is designed to provide alumni with opportunities to return to campus and share their experiences directly with students. It aims to strengthen alumni contributions, foster closer ties between alumni and the faculty, and acknowledge their achievements.
This strategic discussion reflects the commitment of FPK UNAIR to involve all stakeholders, including alumni, in fostering growth and positive impact. The faculty hopes these initiatives will bring significant changes, from boosting students’ interest in the fisheries sector to expanding public awareness of the study programs offered.
