Three students from the Fisheries Product Technology Study Program, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga — Ria Novita, Eka Martha Lestari, and Yovanda Rahma Alfarizka — have successfully completed their Field Work Practice (PKL) at PT Dua Putra Utama Makmur Tbk., Pati. The internship took place over two months, from June 30 to August 29, 2025. This hands-on experience served as a valuable opportunity for the students, who were part of Group 1, to directly engage with real industrial operations in the fisheries sector while applying the theoretical knowledge they had gained on campus.
Throughout their internship, the students were actively involved in implementing Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), and Critical Control Point (CCP) systems in the production process of frozen vannamei shrimp. They also participated in monitoring sanitation and production line efficiency to ensure compliance with industry standards. After completing the data collection phase, the students joined the company’s Research and Development (R&D) team, gaining broader insight into product innovation and industrial research processes.
As part of the R&D team, the students had the opportunity to contribute to the development of local fishery-based food products such as ebi fry and ebi katsu. They were involved not only in product observation but also in experimental trials, including frying processes and taste testing alongside the company’s management team. This experience provided them with first-hand understanding of quality management, sanitation systems, critical control management, and product innovation techniques relevant to the fisheries processing industry.
The internship program brought numerous benefits to the participants, particularly in enhancing their technical skills, deepening their understanding of industrial quality standards, and providing authentic work experience in a professional environment. For the students, this experience was more than just an academic requirement—it was a gateway to understanding how classroom theories are implemented in real industrial contexts.
One of the participants, Ria Novita, shared her thoughts, stating, “This internship has broadened our horizons and shown us how the theories we learn in university can be directly applied in the fisheries industry. It’s a truly valuable experience that prepares us for future professional challenges.
