FPK UNAIR 26 January 2026 – Welcoming New Master’s Students
The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga officially launched the orientation program for its new postgraduate students today. Specifically, this event welcomed students from the Master in Fisheries Science and the Master in Fisheries and Marine Biotechnology. The faculty organized this hybrid gathering in Building C, Room 501. Currently, 15 students attended the session in person while 7 others joined through digital platforms.
To begin the event, Mahfudz Dzotul Hasanah, S.Pi., acted as the master of ceremonies. Shortly after, Ahmad Jamil Abdunnasir, S.Pi., led a solemn prayer to bless the academic journey ahead. This orientation serves as a vital bridge for students to understand the faculty’s high academic standards.
During the opening session, the Dean of FPK UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Endang Dewi Masithah, Ir., M.P., delivered a powerful keynote speech. First and foremost, she emphasized that all research must support SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Consequently, students should focus on protecting marine biodiversity through scientific innovation.
In addition to environmental goals, the Dean highlighted the importance of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger). She explained that fisheries technology plays a massive role in global food security. Moreover, by improving aquaculture efficiency, students help local communities escape poverty, which directly supports SDG 1 (No Poverty).
Understanding the Faculty Framework
Following the Dean’s remarks, Dr. Laksmi Sulmartiwi, S.Pi., M.P., explained the faculty’s academic regulations. She stated that the faculty provides advanced laboratory facilities to support all postgraduate students. Furthermore, she noted that FPK UNAIR actively participates in SDG 13 (Climate Action) by researching how climate change affects aquatic ecosystems.
Subsequently, the Program Coordinators provided deeper insights into their respective curricula. Prof. Dr. Gunanti Mahasri Ir., M.Si., as the head of the Master in Fisheries Science, detailed the focus on sustainable resource management. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. A. Shofy Mubarak, S.Pi., M.Si., represented the Biotechnology program. He discussed how molecular engineering can revolutionize the fisheries industry in an eco-friendly way.
As the final part of the agenda, the new students introduced themselves to build a strong internal community. This session encouraged immediate collaboration among researchers. Indeed, such teamwork is a practical application of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Finally, the participants took a group photo to commemorate the start of their semester. FPK UNAIR hopes that this new cohort will produce impactful international publications. Therefore, the faculty continues to provide full support for every student’s academic growth and global contribution.
