Surabaya – New students of the Fisheries Product Technology (THP) Study Program, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), had the opportunity to become more familiar with the study program that will become their academic learning environment throughout their university journey. The introduction was delivered by the THP Study Program Coordinator, Heru Pramono, S.Pi., M.Biotech., Ph.D., as part of the 2026 Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB).
Understanding Fisheries Product Technology
In his presentation, Heru introduced the new students to the scientific field of Fisheries Product Technology while providing an overview of the academic journey they will undertake. THP is not merely concerned with fisheries products that are ready for consumption, but encompasses a comprehensive process to produce products that are safe, high-quality, value-added, and capable of responding to society’s needs.
The new students were also introduced to the educational characteristics of THP, which integrate scientific knowledge, technology, and practical applications in the field of fisheries products. Throughout their studies, students will encounter various issues related to processing, food safety, quality, and fisheries product development. This understanding is essential because the fisheries sector does not end when fish are successfully caught or cultivated. Through fisheries product technology, these commodities can be further developed into products with greater added value.
This perspective also introduces students to the contribution of THP to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) through the development and utilization of fisheries-based food resources. At the same time, advances in processing technology and product innovation are closely related to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by encouraging the application of science and technology to create more diverse and value-added fisheries products.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Amid his presentation on the study program, Heru also shared a glimpse of his personal experience during his undergraduate studies. He explained that his academic journey was not always easy and involved various challenges that had to be overcome. His experience provided the new students with an illustration that academic development requires perseverance, adaptability, and a willingness to continuously grow.
Through this study program introduction, new students are expected not only to understand what they will learn in THP, but also to recognize the scientific direction of the program and the opportunities for contribution they can develop throughout their university experience. The introduction also represents the implementation of SDG 4 (Quality Education), as students are introduced from the beginning not only to their academic field but also to how the knowledge they acquire can be applied to address real challenges in the fisheries sector.
With this foundation, new students are expected to begin identifying their areas of interest while preparing themselves for their academic journey at FPK UNAIR. They are not positioned merely as recipients of knowledge, but also as prospective innovators who can contribute to the sustainable processing and utilization of fisheries products in the future.
