On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universitas Airlangga (FPK Unair), held a strategic meeting with Professor Yamahira from Ryuku University, Okinawa, Japan. This collaborative initiative aims to foster academic excellence through knowledge exchange, joint research, and human resource development.
The strategic meeting brought together key representatives from both institutions to discuss potential areas of cooperation. The primary goal of this partnership between FPK Unair and Ryuku University is to enhance academic quality by facilitating the exchange of expertise, methodologies, and innovative ideas in the fields of fisheries, marine science, and sustainable aquatic resource management. Both sides emphasized the importance of collaborative research and the publication of high-impact scientific papers as a foundation for international academic recognition.
In addition to research collaboration, the meeting highlighted opportunities for student and faculty mobility programs. These initiatives are designed to provide FPK Unair students and researchers with exposure to advanced Japanese academic practices, laboratory techniques, and fieldwork methodologies, while Japanese counterparts gain insights into Indonesia’s rich marine biodiversity and aquaculture potential. The mobility programs are expected to strengthen cross-cultural competence and global academic networks for all participants.
Moreover, both institutions explored the development of joint curriculum programs, workshops, and seminars that can be implemented to improve educational quality and research outcomes. By integrating knowledge from diverse ecological and socio-economic contexts, the partnership aims to create sustainable solutions for pressing challenges in fisheries and marine resource management. This collaboration also seeks to foster innovation, particularly in sustainable aquaculture practices, environmental conservation, and technological applications in fisheries science.
The meeting concluded with mutual commitments to formalize the collaboration through memoranda of understanding (MoU) and action plans for research, publications, and academic exchanges. Both FPK Unair and Ryuku University expressed optimism that this partnership will contribute to advancing academic standards, producing competent human resources, and supporting the universities’ strategic vision for internationalization.
