FPK News – As a form of internationalization of the Faculty, FPK invited Prof. Wan Maznah Wan Omar from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia as a Guest Lecturer. “Phycological Research for Sustainable Aquaculture” as a topic of public lectures for FPK students.

Prof.’s initial presentation Maznah explains that Aquaculture in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is defined as the cultivation of populations of freshwater and saltwater fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae, and other organisms under controlled conditions. From the point of view of agriculture implies an explanation that aquaculture is a form of intervention in the maintenance process to increase production, such as ordinary stocking, feeding, protection from predators, etc. Agriculture also implies individual or corporate ownership of cultivated stocks.

“Sustainable Development is defined as the management and conservation of natural resources; which aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be fulfilled not only in the present but also for future generations. Aquaculture should not create significant disturbances in the ecosystem, or cause loss of biodiversity or a large impact of pollution. Aquaculture must be socially responsible and contribute to people’s welfare. Aquaculture must be a viable business with good long-term prospects, “said Prof. Maznah.

The next topic is “Phycology” (Greek: phykos = seaweed). Study of algae (algology); Botanical sub-discipline. Most algae are eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms that live in wet environments. Many single-celled and microscopic species; many others are multicellular to one degree or another, some of which grow to a large size. Phycology includes studies of prokaryotic forms known as blue-green algae or Cyanobacteria.

Prof. Maznah filled the lecture for 120 minutes with a very interactive situation. It is expected that guest lectures from Universiti Sains Malaysia Lecturers will motivate FPK students to actively take part in participating outbound students both part-time (<3 months) and full-time (≥ 3 months).
