The “SMART-A” program marks a pioneering cross-country collaboration in the fisheries sector, designed to unite students from leading universities worldwide in addressing global food system challenges. The program encourages environmental awareness, promotes eco-friendly lifestyles, and inspires innovation in developing sustainable food solutions. By integrating academic knowledge, field experience, and cultural exchange, SMART-A becomes a dynamic platform for shaping future leaders in sustainable fisheries and marine-based industries.
Through this initiative, students gain hands-on experience in developing efficient cold chain systems, applying safe consumption practices based on microbiological testing, and utilizing modern processing technologies to minimize fishery waste. These activities directly support the implementation of circular and green economy principles, showcasing the vital role of innovation and research in promoting resource efficiency. The program aligns with Universitas Airlangga’s commitment to advancing sustainable fisheries education while fostering international collaboration and research-based learning.
The hybrid format of SMART-A allows for inclusive participation, combining both on-site and online activities. Offline sessions feature international classes, laboratory practices, industrial visits, cultural exchanges, and art performances, providing immersive experiences that blend science and culture. Meanwhile, online activities include webinar series and guest lectures by experts in fisheries technology and sustainability. This dual-mode approach ensures that participants from different countries can fully engage in interactive and collaborative learning, transcending geographical boundaries.
Held from October 20 to 24, 2025, the program gathered international students from Pakistan, Gambia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Yemen. Over five days, participants attended lectures on marine product utilization, practiced fish-based food production techniques, and visited aquaculture and catfish processing sites in Sidoarjo. These activities not only enriched participants’ technical understanding but also deepened their appreciation of sustainable aquaculture systems practiced in Indonesia, one of the world’s leading maritime nations.
The SMART-A program also supports the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 4 (Quality Education), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), and 14 (Life Below Water). Through the active involvement of students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, SMART-A nurtures innovation, awareness, and global networks that contribute to building fairer, healthier, and more sustainable marine food systems for the future. Universitas Airlangga continues to uphold its vision of creating impactful educational programs that combine knowledge, innovation, and social responsibility for the advancement of the global community.
