The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) Universitas Airlangga held a Journalism Writing Training session aimed at strengthening students’ media literacy and publication skills in the digital era. The program, conducted on Thursday (11/6/2026) at Room B.302, Building B FPK UNAIR, brought together student representatives from various organizations as part of the faculty’s commitment to improving academic communication and institutional visibility.
The training activity was attended by representatives from student organizations (ORMAWA), semi-autonomous bodies (BSO), FPK Ambassadors, and the FPK UNAIR Public Relations and Media Centre Internship Team. This diverse participation reflected the faculty’s strong intention to build a unified and professional communication culture among students, ensuring that academic activities, achievements, and innovations within FPK UNAIR are well documented and effectively disseminated to the public.
The event featured Khefti Al Mawalia, S.I.Kom., M.Ed.Kom., an editor from the Universitas Airlangga Public Relations and Media Center (PHMP), as the main speaker. He provided comprehensive insights into journalistic writing principles, news structure, and effective storytelling techniques tailored for academic environments. The session emphasized how students can transform organizational activities into structured, engaging, and publishable news content suitable for both internal and external media platforms.
The program was officially opened by the Vice Dean III of FPK UNAIR, Annur Ahadi Abdillah, S.Pi., M.Si., Ph.D. In his remarks, he highlighted the strategic role of students as information disseminators who bridge faculty activities with broader society. He emphasized that strong writing and communication skills are essential in the digital era, not only for documenting student organization programs but also for promoting research outputs, academic achievements, community service activities, and various innovations produced within the faculty.
He further stated that improving journalistic competence among students is an important investment for the institution. According to him, well-written news articles can significantly enhance the visibility of faculty achievements while strengthening public understanding of the contributions made by FPK UNAIR. “Through this training, we hope students can improve their ability to write and present information properly so that various activities, achievements, and accomplishments of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences can reach a wider audience,” said Annur Ahadi Abdillah, S.Pi., M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Dean III of FPK UNAIR.
Participants came from a wide range of student organizations, including the Student Executive Board of FPK UNAIR, Student Legislative Board, HIMAKUA, Fisheries Product Technology Student Association (HIMATEKHIKAN), Kajian Keilmiahan Mahasiswa (KAKEMA), FPK Ambassadors, Fisheries Processing Club (FPC), Islamic Spiritual Studies Unit (SKI), and the FPK UNAIR Public Relations Media Centre Internship Team. Their involvement demonstrated a strong collaborative spirit across student bodies in strengthening institutional communication capacity.
Beyond technical skills, the training also encouraged students to understand the importance of credible information dissemination in academic institutions. Participants were guided to produce news content that is not only informative and accurate but also aligned with journalistic ethics and professional standards. This initiative is expected to empower student organizations to publish content not only in internal media channels but also in external platforms, expanding the reach of FPK UNAIR’s academic and non-academic achievements.
This activity also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through enhancing students’ literacy and communication competencies, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strengthening collaboration between faculty communication units and student organizations in disseminating institutional information.
Through this program, FPK UNAIR continues to encourage students to grow as capable communicators and young journalists who can contribute to strengthening the faculty’s image at both national and international levels.
