The construction of a sea wall in Tangerang, which has been granted a Building Rights Title (HGB), raises a big question: who truly benefits?
According to Prof. Mochammad Amin Alamsjah, the sea wall blocks access for coastal communities who rely on the sea for their livelihoods. Many fishermen now have to travel farther, spend more money, and face greater risks just to fish.
Beyond harming fishermen, the marine ecosystem is also under threat.
“This wall reduces the ocean’s capacity to support marine life. In the long run, it will damage fish breeding areas and reduce fish populations,” he explained.
Moreover, this construction creates a conflict of interest. The sea should be a shared resource, not controlled by private entities.
“When certain interests violate the law and harm the people, the government has a duty to intervene,” Prof. Amin asserted.
