The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), has reaffirmed its exceptional commitment to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 14: Life Below Water. This dedication is demonstrated through a range of academic, research, and community engagement programs focused on the conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems.
As a result of its continuous efforts, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences has successfully achieved the top national ranking in the implementation of SDG 14. This milestone serves as a tangible proof of the faculty’s active contribution to sustaining marine biodiversity and educating the younger generation on the importance of preserving underwater ecosystems. The recognition also underscores UNAIR’s role as a leading institution in driving sustainable practices and marine conservation initiatives across Indonesia.
One of the faculty’s flagship initiatives that embodies this commitment is the SEAco (Save Ecosystem of Aquatic Coral) program—an environmental preservation project focusing on the rehabilitation of coral reef ecosystems damaged by climate change, pollution, and human activities. Coral reefs are vital habitats for numerous marine species and play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of ocean life. Through this program, various activities such as coral transplantation, marine clean-up campaigns, and community empowerment workshops are conducted to promote sustainable marine stewardship.
Held from October 20–24, 2025, SEAco also incorporated educational components, including lectures on fisheries conservation, mangrove ecotourism field visits, and aquascape-making workshops. The program concluded with a cultural exchange night where participants showcased traditional performances from their respective countries. This immersive learning experience not only enhanced students’ understanding of marine sustainability but also fostered cross-cultural collaboration and environmental awareness among participants.
The 2025 SEAco program attracted international students from Gambia, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, and Thailand, reflecting UNAIR’s growing reputation as a hub for global marine education. With Malaysia contributing the largest number of participants, the event emphasized regional cooperation in protecting marine resources and promoting eco-conscious initiatives. The program also served as a platform for students to exchange knowledge, ideas, and cultural perspectives, strengthening global solidarity in addressing environmental challenges.
Conducted annually, SEAco has evolved into an international academic forum that connects students and researchers from various countries to discuss and respond to global marine conservation issues. The program not only aligns with UNAIR’s mission to advance sustainable fisheries and marine sciences but also embodies the spirit of SDG 14 by nurturing environmentally responsible future leaders. Through education, innovation, and collaboration, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences continues to set an inspiring example of how higher education institutions can play a transformative role in protecting life below water.
