Surabaya – Twenty-seven students accompanied by two teachers from SMA Darul Ulum 1 Peterongan Jombang visited the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), to gain firsthand insight into higher education, research, innovation, and the potential of Indonesia’s fisheries and marine resources. The visit involved students from PIKIR (Praktisi Kewirausahaan, Inovasi & Riset), an organization focused on entrepreneurship, innovation, and research.
The academic visit was attended by Prof. Dr. Akhmad Taufiq Mukti, S.Pi., M.Si., Head of the Department of Aquaculture; Eka Saputra, S.Pi., M.Si., Head of the Department of Marine Science; and Abdul Manan, S.Pi., M.Si., Ph.D., Coordinator of the Aquaculture Study Program. The activity was opened by Prof. Akhmad Taufiq Mukti, who welcomed the students and highlighted the importance of introducing younger generations to the potential of Indonesia’s fisheries and marine resources.
The Vice Principal of SMA Darul Ulum 1 Peterongan, Rizki Yudha Sentika, M.Pd., Gr., also delivered a speech and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity provided by FPK UNAIR. He hoped that the visit would give students new experiences and knowledge that could be brought back and shared within their school environment.
“We would like to express our gratitude for this opportunity. Through this visit, we hope the students can gain valuable knowledge and later bring what they have learned back to school,” said Rizki.
During the visit, students attended three academic sessions. The first session was delivered by Dr. nat. techn. Muhamad Nur Ghoyatul Amin, S.TP., M.P., M.Sc., with the topic “Biorefineries of Indonesian Wild Brown Algae.” The session introduced the potential of Indonesia’s brown algae and encouraged students to view marine resources as valuable opportunities that can be further developed through innovation and research. The presentation generated active participation, with questions focusing on how fucoidan is produced and the benefits of brown algae, reflecting the students’ interest in marine resource utilization.
The next session was delivered by Dr. Veryl Hasan, S.Pi., M.P., through “Fish and Us” (Ikan dan Kita), which introduced students to fish and their relationship with human life and the aquatic environment. The activity continued with a study program introduction delivered by Terry Previo Avianto, M.Si., providing students with an overview of academic fields and educational opportunities available at FPK UNAIR.
The visit provided students with a direct learning experience in a university environment while introducing them to fisheries and marine science, research, and educational opportunities. Exposure to brown algae, fish resources, and fisheries and marine education also contributed to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by expanding students’ learning experiences and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by fostering greater awareness among younger generations of the potential and sustainable utilization of aquatic resources.
