The series of events at the 37th PIMNAS at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) was not just about academic achievements, but also a celebration of cultural pride. On Thursday, October 17, 2024, the UNAIR in Traditional Attire event grabbed the public’s attention. Over 1,000 participants from the academic community, including alumni, international students, and university officials, took part in the lively parade, all dressed in traditional Indonesian fabrics.
This was no ordinary parade. The event was designed to commemorate National Batik Day and highlight the significance of traditional textiles as part of national identity. Participants wore a variety of fabrics, ranging from classic to modern batik. “UNAIR in Traditional Attire is a reflection of Indonesia’s cultural diversity that thrives on this campus,” said UNAIR Rector, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih.
The Philosophy Behind Traditional Attire
In Indonesian culture, wearing traditional clothing holds deep meaning. The philosophy of “ajining raga saka busana”—which means that one’s dignity is reflected in how they dress—was one of the key messages of the event. Through UNAIR in Traditional Attire, the university reminded everyone of the importance of preserving cultural values, especially among the younger generation.
Ara, a student from UNAIR’s Faculty of Humanities, expressed her excitement about participating in the parade. “I’m so proud! This event really made us realize how our campus truly represents Indonesia’s diversity,” she said. According to Ara, UNAIR in Traditional Attire has become an important moment that unites the academic community from various backgrounds.
Becoming an Annual Tradition
The grand hope for this event is that UNAIR in Traditional Attire will become an annual tradition. Besides strengthening pride in Indonesia’s cultural heritage, the event also serves as a gathering across generations. Some of the fabrics showcased, recognized by UNESCO and the Museum of Art Berlin, demonstrate that Indonesian culture holds a significant place on the global stage.
