SURABAYA – The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held the Silaturahmi Orang Tua Mahasiswa Baru (SILMABA), or New Student Parents Gathering, on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the FPK UNAIR courtyard. One of the main agendas was a presentation on the faculty’s profile and educational system delivered by the Dean of FPK UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Endang Dewi Masithah, Ir., M.P.
The session provided parents and guardians of new students with a comprehensive overview of the academic environment that will support their children’s educational journey. During the event, Prof. Endang also introduced the faculty leadership, lecturers, and educational staff of FPK UNAIR.
Educational System and Opportunities for Student Development
The presentation covered the faculty’s study programmes, curriculum, campus facilities, academic system, and career prospects for graduates. Beyond classroom learning, students are encouraged to develop their competencies through entrepreneurship programmes, independent internships, fieldwork practices, and various forms of practice-based learning experiences.
FPK UNAIR also provides internationalisation opportunities through inbound and outbound programmes, as well as collaborations with stakeholders and overseas universities. These opportunities allow students to broaden their academic experiences, expand professional networks, and develop a global perspective.
The discussion session with parents also highlighted the faculty’s readiness to support students’ academic and competency development. Students have opportunities to participate in internships, fieldwork programmes, seminars with industry practitioners, competitions, international activities, and community engagement programmes. The faculty also supports student organisations as spaces for exploration, leadership development, and capacity building.
Alumni Share Insights into Career Prospects
The session also featured Slamet Agus Wijaya, S.Pi., a member of the first cohort of the Aquaculture Study Programme in 2001 and currently the Operational Director of PT Kaia Anugerah Indonesia. His presence provided parents and new students with insights into alumni achievements and career opportunities in the fisheries sector.
“Parents should no longer have doubts about their children pursuing higher education in fisheries. With two-thirds of Indonesia’s territory consisting of marine waters, opportunities for careers in the fisheries sector are abundant and can offer promising prospects,” Agus said.
Through strengthening the quality of education and providing diverse opportunities for student development, SILMABA 2026 supports the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education). Furthermore, the development of collaborations with stakeholders and universities at both national and international levels contributes to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Through this event, FPK UNAIR hopes that parents and guardians will gain a deeper understanding of the faculty’s educational system and the various development opportunities available to prepare students for their future professional careers.
