The international e-START program organized by Hiroshima University, Japan, from February 28 to March 21, 2025, became a valuable platform for strengthening cross-border academic collaboration. With the theme “Sustainable use of marine fishery resources: studies through oceanographic observations,” the program brought together 42 students and six lecturers/researchers from Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, and Peru in a fully online format, fostering a unique learning and research experience.
The e-START program, hosted by Hiroshima University, featured participants from Indonesia (Universitas Airlangga), Vietnam (Can Tho University), Japan (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology and Hiroshima University), Taiwan (National Taiwan Ocean University), and Peru (National University of San Marcos). Among the Indonesian representatives, seven undergraduate Aquaculture students from FPK Unair—Aditya Jayawardhana Ramadhani, Taura Lingga Darmawan, Alodia Patricia Rismauli, Erviena Andika Damayanti, Nasywa Athallah Gunawan, Elga Ryan Cantika Zelighaubert Surya Balo, and Rehan Fitrianto—actively participated. In addition, Ayu Lana Nafisyah, S.Pi., M.Sc., Ph.D., represented UNAIR as a lecturer and facilitator, continuing the program’s commitment to global sustainability issues since its inception in 2023.
During the three-week program, participants engaged in comprehensive online lectures and hands-on field practices. One highlight was the live report session on DNA sampling of aquatic organisms in Japanese waters, providing practical exposure to advanced marine research techniques. The interactive discussions allowed participants to exchange insights on challenges and innovations in sustainable fisheries management. These cross-national exchanges enriched participants’ understanding of how different countries approach environmental conservation and resource utilization, emphasizing the importance of collaborative solutions.
Rehan Fitrianto, one of the FPK Unair students specializing in Marine Science and Technology, shared his enthusiasm for the program. “I feel fortunate to learn directly from a global perspective and understand the critical role of international collaboration for the future of fisheries,” he said. Such experiences underline the program’s dual focus on academic rigor and intercultural exchange, preparing young scholars to address pressing global issues.
Beyond academics, the e-START program serves as a platform for establishing long-lasting international networks. Students and faculty alike can maintain professional connections that support future collaborative research and sustainability initiatives. The program is expected to continue inspiring greater participation among students in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in fisheries and marine conservation. By combining online lectures, practical fieldwork, and international dialogue, e-START exemplifies how educational programs can foster innovation, global awareness, and actionable knowledge in marine resource management.
