Maritime Education: SMA IT Ar Rahman Banjarbaru Explores Fisheries Innovation at FPK UNAIR

FPK UNAIR 23 January 2026 – School Visit

The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) hosted an educational visit from SMA IT Ar Rahman Banjarbaru on Wednesday (21/01/2026). Held at the FPK UNAIR campus, this visit aimed to broaden students’ perspectives on the potential of the fisheries and marine sectors as pillars of national food security. This activity is a tangible implementation of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), fostering synergy between secondary and higher education institutions to develop a younger generation conscious of Indonesia’s maritime potential.

The event was warmly opened by the Vice Dean II of FPK UNAIR, Mr. Kustiawan Tri Pursetyo, S.Pi., M.Vet., Ph.D.. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the crucial role of the youth in maintaining the sustainability of marine ecosystems, in line with SDG 14 (Life Below Water). He expressed his hope that this visit would motivate students to contribute to the wise and innovative management of Indonesia’s marine wealth.

The session continued with an in-depth presentation regarding the study programs at FPK UNAIR. Mr. Terry Previo Avianto, S.Pi., M.Si., explained the bright prospects in the Fisheries Product Technology (FPT) field, where the added value of fishery products is key to boosting the creative economy and supporting SDG 1 (No Poverty) through the empowerment of coastal communities. Meanwhile, Mrs. Dita Wisudyawati, S.Pi., M.Sc. highlighted the excellence of the Aquaculture Study Program, which plays a vital role in SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by providing sustainable animal protein sources.

Student enthusiasm peaked during the facility tour. Guided by Mr. Qushai, the laboratory technician, students visited the Microbiology Laboratory to observe research on microorganisms that support the health of fishery commodities. The journey continued to the Chemistry and Analysis Laboratory and the Fish Anatomy and Aquaculture Laboratory, where students learned about fish biological structures and environmentally friendly cultivation optimization.

A major highlight of the visit was the introduction to the Aquaponic System. This innovation demonstrates how integrating fish farming with plant cultivation can minimize waste and conserve water. This aligns with FPK UNAIR’s commitment to SDG 13 (Climate Action) by creating adaptive technologies to mitigate climate change impacts.

Mrs. Dwi Yuli Pujiastuti, S.Pi., M.P., M.Sc. also presented various salt-based products developed through faculty research. Education on salt processing is vital for enhancing national food independence. To conclude the activities, students were invited to the Educational Ponds located at the back of the FPK campus. At this site, they directly observed integrated pond management, which serves as a center for student research and practice in developing modern aquaculture techniques.
