FPK UNAIR January 26th 2026 – School Visit
The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to demonstrate its active role in disseminating aquatic science to the younger generation. On Monday, January 26, 2026, FPK UNAIR hosted an educational visit from MAN 1 Salatiga. Approximately 160 students, accompanied by 10 supervising teachers, arrived to explore the academic ecosystem and excellent research facilities of one of Indonesia’s leading fisheries faculties.
This visit represents a strategic step by the university to strengthen SDG 17 (Partnerships for The Goals) through collaboration with secondary education institutions. Furthermore, this activity aims to introduce the vast potential of the blue economy to students as future leaders.
Exploration of Laboratory Facilities and Cultivation Technology
The activity began by dividing the students into three small groups to ensure an optimal knowledge transfer process. Accompanied by faculty student ambassadors, the students started the facility tour by visiting the Microbiology Laboratory. Subsequently, they moved to the Aquaponic System area and educational ponds located at the back of the FPK UNAIR building. At this location, students observed firsthand how sustainable cultivation technology integrates fish farming with efficient plant production.
The educational journey continued to the Anatomy and Fish Seed Production Laboratory, as well as the Chemistry and Analysis Laboratory. Specifically, the students received explanations regarding the importance of monitoring water quality and aquatic biota health. This presentation aligns with climate change mitigation efforts under SDG 13 (Climate Action). Therefore, early education on the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems is crucial amidst current global environmental challenges.
After the field sessions concluded, all participants gathered in Room B-3.04 for the formal welcoming session. The Vice Dean III of FPK UNAIR, Mr. Annur Ahadi Abdillah, S.Pi., M.Si., Ph.D., opened the event by providing motivation regarding career opportunities in the marine sector. Next, Mr. Terry Previo Avianto, S.Pi., M.Si. delivered an in-depth lecture on the faculty’s academic profile and research contributions.
During his presentation, he emphasized that innovation in fisheries has a direct impact on national food security or SDG 2 (Zero Hunger). Thus, this sector holds the key to improving the welfare of coastal communities to reduce poverty rates in line with SDG 1 (No Poverty) targets. The students showed great enthusiasm in discussing the prospects of higher education at FPK UNAIR, which now maintains international quality standards.
FPK UNAIR’s Contribution to Marine Sustainability
This visit provided significant benefits for students to understand the real-world implementation of SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Through direct observation in various Research Laboratories, students realized that managing marine resources requires a comprehensive scientific approach. As a result, this activity is expected to spark students’ interest in pursuing fisheries and marine sciences.
FPK UNAIR remains committed to opening its doors to other educational institutions.
