Airlangga Talk and Discussion (ATD) has once again become a platform for young innovators in aquaculture to exchange ideas and experiences. This academic event, initiated by the Advocacy and Student Welfare Division (ADKESMA) of the Aquaculture Student Association, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) Universitas Airlangga, aims to broaden the perspectives of students, particularly first-year aquaculture students, in understanding academic and professional challenges. Held under the theme “Aquaculture Talk and Discussion (ATD): Embracing the Future of Aquaculture through Certified Internships and Independent Studies,” the program was designed to introduce the Internship and Certified Independent Study (MSIB) Program as a gateway for students to gain practical, real-world experience relevant to their academic journey.
The event took place on Saturday, August 16, 2025, during the departmental orientation program, Natamandara. The invited speaker, Imam Zarkasih, an active aquaculture student, shared his personal journey and experiences in participating in the MSIB program. In his session, Imam elaborated on the meaning and importance of internships, highlighting the difference between independent internships and impactful (certified) internships. He also emphasized the tangible benefits that students can gain from joining certified internship programs, such as professional networking, skill development, and exposure to the aquaculture industry’s working environment.
New students responded enthusiastically throughout the session, engaging in active discussions and asking insightful questions about the registration process, selection challenges, and strategies for success in the MSIB program. Imam also provided practical tips on how to prepare strong applications and handle the challenges of real workplace situations. His sharing was not only motivational but also provided valuable insights into how experiential learning can bridge academic knowledge with professional readiness. To appreciate student participation, Imam awarded small tokens of appreciation to several students who posed interesting and thoughtful questions, making the session both interactive and inspiring.
The ATD initiative reflects FPK Universitas Airlangga’s continuous commitment to fostering a learning culture that connects classroom theory with industry practice. By facilitating direct interaction between experienced students and newcomers, the faculty aims to nurture a community of learners who are proactive, competent, and adaptive to changes in the aquaculture sector. The event successfully highlighted how the MSIB program can become an essential stepping stone for aquaculture students in preparing for future careers and contributing to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture innovation in Indonesia. With the growing importance of practical learning in higher education, programs like ATD play a vital role in shaping the next generation of aquaculture professionals ready to advance the blue economy.
