Surabaya – Challenges in the fisheries and marine sectors can no longer be addressed through the efforts of a single institution. Strengthening cross-border academic networks is an important step toward expanding research, education, and the contribution of higher education institutions to sustainable development. This spirit underpinned the strategic meeting between the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), held at the FPK Salt Room.
The strategic meeting was attended by Dr. Norhafiz Hanafi from USM and Dr. Laksmi Sulmartiwi, S.Pi., M.P., Vice Dean I of FPK UNAIR. The meeting served as a platform to strengthen communication between the two institutions while opening opportunities to develop broader collaboration in the fields of academics and marine affairs.
From Strategic Meeting to Collaboration
The strategic meeting served not only as a forum for institutional discussion but also as a momentum to establish collaborative directions that could benefit both institutions. Collaboration between higher education institutions provides opportunities to bring together resources, expertise, and diverse perspectives in addressing challenges in the fisheries and marine sectors.
Strengthening such partnerships is also relevant to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, particularly through the development of partnerships between higher education institutions across countries. Such collaboration enables academic knowledge and experience to move beyond individual institutions, allowing them to be exchanged, expanded, and developed collectively.
Strengthening Marine Education and Research
In the context of higher education, international networks also provide opportunities to enhance the academic experiences of students and lecturers. Knowledge exchange, opportunities for joint research, and the development of academic networks are important components in strengthening human resource capacity in the fisheries and marine sectors.
These efforts are closely aligned with SDG 4: Quality Education, particularly in promoting quality education with a global perspective. For FPK UNAIR, strengthening relationships with international institutions can further expand opportunities for learning and collaboration among its academic community.
