On September 24, 2025, a delegation from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga (FPK Unair) conducted a Monitoring and Evaluation Visit (Monev PKL) to the Marine Fisheries Research Center (Balai Riset Perikanan Laut/BRPL) in Jakarta. The visiting team consisted of Prof. Dr. Akhmad Taufiq Mukti, S.Pi., M.Si., R.M. Browijoyo Santanumurti, S.Pi., M.Sc., and Bastomi Fahriszal, A.Md. Per. Kes. This visit aimed to evaluate the progress of FPK Unair students undertaking their Field Work Practice (PKL) and to strengthen collaboration between the university and BRPL Jakarta in the fields of marine research, aquaculture innovation, and sustainable fisheries development.
A total of four students participated in the internship program at BRPL Jakarta. During the monitoring session, the delegation met with field supervisors including Mr. Septa, Mr. Aziz, and Mrs. Ainun, who shared insights about the students’ performance and contributions during their internship period. As part of their field activities, the students were assigned to Tidung Island and Pari Island, both located in the Thousand Islands region, to participate in a variety of applied marine research and community projects. These included seaweed cultivation, coral reef restoration, water quality monitoring, and biodiversity assessment of local fishery commodities. The experience provided the students with hands-on learning opportunities that bridged theoretical classroom knowledge with real-world applications in marine and coastal environments.
According to the BRPL supervisors, the FPK Unair students displayed strong motivation, adaptability, and a proactive work ethic throughout the internship. They worked effectively under field conditions, contributed meaningfully to on-site research activities, and were well-received by the BRPL team. The supervisors emphasized that the students’ presence had brought positive energy to the research center, as they not only assisted with fieldwork but also engaged in discussions on improving research methodologies and environmental management practices. Their enthusiasm and professionalism left a lasting impression, with BRPL Jakarta expressing that they truly felt the students’ absence after the program ended.
The supervisors at BRPL also shared their openness to future collaboration with FPK Unair, expressing hope that more students would have the opportunity to intern, conduct research, or participate in field-based community projects at BRPL Jakarta. They highlighted the potential for further partnerships in marine biodiversity conservation, aquaculture technology development, and sustainable resource management. This commitment to ongoing collaboration reflects both institutions’ shared vision of supporting marine science education and innovation in Indonesia.
Through this monitoring and evaluation visit, FPK Unair reaffirms its dedication to enhancing experiential learning and real-world exposure for its students. The collaboration with BRPL Jakarta not only provides valuable research opportunities but also fosters the development of future marine scientists equipped with practical skills, environmental awareness, and a strong sense of contribution to Indonesia’s blue economy.
