The third day of the 2026 Join International Class (JIC) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) was held on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) UNAIR as one of the learning destinations. Held at the FPK UNAIR campus, the program welcomed eight participants from Indonesia, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Malaysia, and Timor-Leste under the theme “Connecting Global Minds Through Collaborative Learning.” The activity provided an international learning experience while introducing participants to fisheries and marine sciences at FPK UNAIR.
Introducing FPK UNAIR and Fisheries and Marine Sciences
The activities began with an introduction to FPK UNAIR delivered by Dwi Yuli Pujiastuti, S.Pi., M.P. The session provided an overview of the faculty’s academic environment and introduced participants to various fields within fisheries and marine sciences. Through this session, participants gained an initial understanding of the academic activities and scientific disciplines developed at FPK UNAIR.
The introduction also marked the beginning of an interdisciplinary learning experience that connected participants from different countries with the academic environment of FPK UNAIR. This interaction allowed them to gain new perspectives on fisheries and marine sciences while experiencing an international academic setting.
Exploring Fish, Probiotics, and Microalgae
The learning sessions continued with “Fish are all around us. Do we know enough about them?”, delivered by Dr. Veryl Hasan, S.Pi., M.Si. The session encouraged participants to deepen their understanding of fish and their roles in aquatic ecosystems and human life.
The program then featured “Probiotic and Its Application for Aquaculture”, presented by Muhammad Browijoyo Santanumurti, S.Pi., M.Sc. The session introduced the application of probiotics in aquaculture as part of efforts to develop effective and sustainable aquatic farming practices.
Participants also attended “Biorefineries of Microalgae” by Dr. nat. techn. Muhammad Nur Ghoyatul Amin and “Non-Destructive Testing in Fisheries Products” by Terry Previo Avianto, S.Pi., M.Si. These sessions broadened participants’ knowledge of fisheries resources, aquatic ecosystems, microalgae utilization, and fisheries product technology.
Faculty Tour and Fish Nugget Practice
Beyond classroom learning, participants joined a Faculty Tour guided by the organizing committee to explore the FPK UNAIR environment and facilities. After lunch, the program continued with a Practice of Fish Nugget from 13.00 to 14.30 WIB. The practical session was facilitated by members of the Fisheries Processing Club (FPC) Student Semi-Autonomous Organization, giving participants direct experience in processing fisheries products through an interactive and hands-on activity.
Strengthening International Collaboration
The FPK UNAIR activities in JIC 2026 served not only to expand academic knowledge but also to encourage interaction and experience-sharing among participants from different countries. Through interdisciplinary learning and collaborative activities, the program supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting inclusive international learning. The fisheries product processing practice also relates to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) through the utilization of aquatic resources as food products. Meanwhile, participation from five countries reflects the spirit of international networking and collaboration in line with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
