SURABAYA – The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) created an interactive learning environment through Jaladhi 2026, part of the Faculty’s Campus Life Introduction Program for New Students (PKKMB) under Universitas Airlangga’s PKKMB Amerta. Entering its second day on Thursday (August 6, 2026), new students participated in various outdoor activities designed through an experiential learning approach. Through this method, participants were not only introduced to academic materials but also encouraged to learn through direct experiences.
Learning Maritime Knowledge Through Collaborative Games
One of the main activities on the second day was the Skill-Based Fun Games (Maritime Quiz). The activity was designed to strengthen new students’ understanding of fisheries, marine science, maritime affairs, and the values upheld by FPK UNAIR through engaging educational games.
The game was divided into two stations. At the first station, Conceptual Quick Response, each group participated in a quiz covering topics related to fisheries, marine science, maritime affairs, and the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine at Universitas Airlangga. Across three rounds, participants took turns answering questions drawn from envelopes, while unanswered questions were passed on to other groups.
Meanwhile, at the Field Skills/Simulation Station, students participated in a relay game representing the fish-handling chain, from harvesting and handling to packaging and distribution. Each group member was assigned a different role, making communication, coordination, and teamwork essential to successfully completing the activity.
Building Understanding Through Experience
Unlike conventional learning methods, the series of games was designed using human-centered role-play and outbound activities. This approach allowed students to gain direct learning experiences while simultaneously developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and collaboration from the very beginning of their university journey.
Samir, a new student in the Fisheries Product Technology Study Program, expressed his appreciation for the learning concept implemented during Jaladhi 2026.
“I think the activities were exciting because we could learn while playing. Besides gaining more knowledge about fisheries and marine science, we also became more united with our group members,” he said.
Through its experiential learning approach, Jaladhi 2026 represents one of FPK UNAIR’s efforts to create a more active, enjoyable, and meaningful campus introduction experience. The program also contributes to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by providing innovative, participatory, and competency-oriented learning experiences from the beginning of students’ academic journeys.
