Expanding Green Spaces, Growing Shared Benefits

A total of 200 tree seedlings were brought to Begaganlimo Village through Green Hills Action, one of the environmental programs of SALMON 2026. Held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, the activity brought together SALMON committee members, local residents, village officials, and supervising lecturers to carry out a greening initiative on village land.

The seedlings were provided by the Brantas River Basin Management Agency (BPDAS Brantas) and consisted of three tree species: durian, matoa, and jackfruit. Of the 200 seedlings available, 150 were planted directly on designated village land, while the remaining 50 were distributed to residents to be planted and maintained in their respective surroundings.

Beyond a Single Plot of Land

The tree planting was carried out collectively on land that had been prepared beforehand. Community involvement was an important part of the activity, as environmental greening does not end with planting trees but also requires continuous care to ensure that the seedlings grow and provide long-term benefits.

The distribution of 50 seedlings to residents also served as an effort to broaden the impact of Green Hills Action. By planting and caring for the seedlings in their own surroundings, residents can contribute to expanding green areas beyond the designated planting site. Through this approach, the greening initiative is expected to spread throughout Begaganlimo Village and its surrounding environment.

“Green Hills Action is SALMON 2026’s step toward planting 200 tree seedlings in Begaganlimo Village, with the hope that they will grow and benefit both the environment and the community.” — Alifia, Person in Charge of Green Hills Action SALMON 2026

Planting Today, Protecting Tomorrow

Through Green Hills Action, 150 tree seedlings were successfully planted, while 50 others were handed over to local residents. However, the success of the activity cannot be measured solely by the number of seedlings planted. More importantly, it depends on how the seedlings are maintained until they grow and provide benefits for the environment and the community.

The initiative also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Tree planting is one practical step toward increasing vegetation, protecting the environment, and supporting the sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems.

Ultimately, Green Hills Action is more than planting 200 tree seedlings in a single day. It represents an initial step toward fostering environmental awareness and encouraging the community to take responsibility for what has been planted, both on village land and within their own neighborhoods.
