Probolinggo – SOSCAMP × HIMVIST 2026 provided Aquaculture students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), with an immersive learning experience beyond the classroom. Organized through a collaboration between the Department of Social and Community Service (SPM) and the Department of External Relations (HUBLU) of the Aquaculture Student Association (HIMAKUA), the program took place on July 11–12, 2026, at the Brackish Water Aquaculture Installation (IBAP) Probolinggo and Gili Ketapang Island. A total of 31 participants, consisting of 30 students and one supervising lecturer, joined a series of activities combining educational field visits, environmental conservation initiatives, and student bonding.

Through the program, participants gained first-hand experience in brackish water aquaculture, coastal ecosystem conservation, and the practical application of aquaculture science. The activities were designed to broaden students’ academic perspectives while fostering environmental awareness and a commitment to the sustainable management of aquatic resources.

Learning Brackish Water Aquaculture at IBAP Probolinggo

The program began with an educational visit to the Brackish Water Aquaculture Installation (IBAP) Probolinggo under the guidance of Muhammad Hanif Azhar, S.Pi., M.Si., Ph.D. During the visit, participants learned about the cultivation of various brackish water aquaculture commodities, the technologies implemented in production systems, and the management of supporting facilities used to maintain efficient and sustainable aquaculture operations.

Students also had the opportunity to observe aquaculture facilities directly, allowing them to connect classroom knowledge with real-world practices. This experiential learning approach provided valuable insights into how aquaculture science contributes to the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

HIMAKUA President Alya explained that the program was designed to offer students practical learning experiences beyond theoretical knowledge.

“Through SOSCAMP × HIMVIST, we aim to provide students with the opportunity to observe the real-world application of aquaculture science while understanding the importance of collaboration in supporting the sustainable management of aquatic resources,” she said.

Exploring Coastal Conservation at Gili Ketapang

After completing the visit to IBAP Probolinggo, participants continued their journey to Gili Ketapang Island, where they attended a guest lecture delivered by Prof. Dr. Kismiyati, Ir., M.Si. on coastal ecosystems and coral reef conservation.

The lecture emphasized the critical role of coral reefs as habitats for diverse marine organisms and as essential ecosystems that support sustainable fisheries. In the evening, participants joined a bonding session and barbecue gathering, creating opportunities to strengthen communication, teamwork, and friendships outside the academic environment.

On the second day, students participated in a training session on coral transplantation techniques, followed by hands-on coral planting activities conducted in collaboration with the Marine and Fisheries Office of Situbondo Regency as the conservation partner. The program concluded with a beach clean-up campaign, demonstrating participants’ commitment to preserving coastal ecosystems through direct environmental action.

Fostering Environmental Stewardship Among Future Aquaculture Professionals

SOSCAMP × HIMVIST 2026 enabled students to gain not only academic knowledge of aquaculture and coastal conservation but also practical experience in environmental stewardship through meaningful community-based activities. The collaboration among HIMAKUA, academic experts, and the Marine and Fisheries Office highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in promoting sustainable management of marine and coastal resources.

The Department of Social and Community Service and the Department of External Relations of HIMAKUA hope that SOSCAMP × HIMVIST will continue to serve as a flagship experiential learning program, producing Aquaculture students who are knowledgeable, adaptable, and environmentally responsible. The initiative also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through experiential field-based learning, SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through coastal conservation education and practical restoration activities, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening collaboration among students, universities, and conservation partners to promote the sustainable management of marine resources.
