FPK 12 January 2026-Student Achivement
The I-BONE FPK UNAIR innovation has achieved a prestigious milestone on the international stage. Through a solid cross-disciplinary collaboration, students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) won an award at IPITEX 2026. Consequently, this achievement solidifies UNAIR’s reputation as a world-class institution. The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) organized this event at BITEC, Bangkok, from January 4th to 9th, 2026.
The IBONE team includes Alfito Putra Ginarta (FPK), Alief Fibi Yanto (FPK), and members from other faculties. As a result, this multidisciplinary synergy brought home the Silver Medal in the Medical Technology category. Furthermore, this victory highlights the excellence of our student research in solving global health issues.
I-BONE FPK UNAIR Innovation: Marine Biotech for Health
The team presented a project titled “I-BONE: Injectable Magnesium Potassium Phosphate – Alginate Hydrogel.” Specifically, their research introduces an injectable implant material for osteoporotic patients. This product accelerates the healing process of bone fractures effectively. In addition, the use of alginate proves the strategic role of the fisheries sector in medical advancement.
The team extracted alginate from marine macroalgae. Subsequently, they processed it into a biocompatible hydrogel nanocomposite. In relation to this, these efforts directly support SDG 14 (Life Below Water). This project shows that marine resources can drive innovation in the healthcare biotechnology sector.
A Rigorous Journey in Bangkok
The journey began on January 4th, 2026, as the team prepared their booth at BITEC. Subsequently, the team underwent a rigorous evaluation by international experts. Three judges visited their booth to evaluate the research and product functionality. Nevertheless, the team maintained their composure and demonstrated exceptional skills. Finally, they received the silver medal during the awarding ceremony on January 9th, 2026.
Alfito Putra Ginarta expressed his pride regarding this experience. Furthermore, the chance to compete in Thailand sparked a new enthusiasm within the team. This collaboration opened many new perspectives regarding bone health. Therefore, it proves that a strong willingness to learn can transform any limitation into an extraordinary process.
Sustainable Impact and Global Synergy (SDGs)
This achievement reinforces FPK UNAIR’s commitment to SDG 17 (Partnerships for The Goals). Additionally, I-BONE supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) by utilizing natural raw materials. This approach offers an alternative to fossil-based synthetic polymers. Thus, the team promotes environmental sustainability through scientific innovation.
Ultimately, this alginate-based innovation contributes to SDG 1 and SDG 2. Increased industrial demand for seaweed will boost the welfare of coastal communities. In conclusion, the I-BONE FPK UNAIR innovation strengthens the local economy while ensuring aquatic ecosystem sustainability.
