Indonesia’s seas belong to all its people, not just a few privileged individuals. However, the construction of a sea wall with Building Rights Title (HGB) in Tangerang seems to ignore this principle.
Prof. Mochammad Amin Alamsjah emphasized that this privatization of the sea violates the constitution and threatens the livelihood of coastal communities.
“The sea should be managed for the collective benefit, not monopolized by a handful of parties,” he stated.
This issue is not just about ownership but also about the fishermen’s livelihoods and the marine ecosystem. Fishermen now face restricted access, forcing them to travel farther for fishing, while coral reefs and seagrass beds may deteriorate due to environmental changes caused by the sea wall.
Prof. Amin urged the government to take firm action to restore the sea to the people.
“If this sea wall violates the law and harms the public, it must be stopped,” he stressed.
The sea is a lifeline for millions of Indonesians. It should not be exploited for the benefit of only a few!
