Students from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continue to make remarkable achievements through innovative solutions. The C-MOUTH team, consisting of five talented members from various faculties, recently earned multiple awards at the prestigious Mandalika Essay Competition 2025, showcasing their groundbreaking work in early oral cancer detection.
The C-MOUTH team, composed of Wildan Abdil Farel (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), Arifianti (Faculty of Medicine), Given Exaudi Girsang (Faculty of Medicine), Adela Febry Widiana (Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences), and Rosinta Dewi Anggraeni (Faculty of Pharmacy), competed at the national-level Mandalika Essay Competition organized by Lembaga Setara Prisma Nusantara (Nusantara Muda). The competition, themed “Youth Dedication in Leveraging Technology for a Superior Indonesia,” was held on February 22–24, 2025, at Universitas Nahdlatul Wathan Mataram, Lombok, NTB. Their innovative project earned the team the Gold Medal, Best Presentation, and Second Place overall, contributing significantly to Universitas Airlangga being recognized as the Overall Champion of MEC 2025.
C-MOUTH is a machine learning-based mobile application designed for early detection of oral cancer. According to team leader Wildan Abdil Farel, the application uses two advanced algorithms to enhance screening accuracy. “C-MOUTH is designed to be fast, reliable, and accessible for both healthcare professionals and the general public. Beyond oral cancer screening, the app includes features like Validity Doctor Check, which allows patients to consult directly with doctors regarding screening results,” Wildan explained. He further emphasized that the app aligns with the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3), promoting healthy lives and well-being for all, reducing mortality from non-communicable diseases, and supporting universal health coverage.
The development of C-MOUTH is currently in the prototype stage. The team plans to collaborate with UNAIR Dental and Oral Hospital and dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya for further development. The implementation process will include verification, validation, and obtaining ethical clearance from the Indonesian Ministry of Health. Wildan shared that once completed, the app will be launched on Play Store, App Store, and the official C-MOUTH website, initially targeting areas with the highest prevalence of oral cancer in Indonesia. “If successfully launched, C-MOUTH will be the first early oral cancer detection application in the country,” he added.
The team’s achievement highlights the growing role of student innovation in advancing healthcare solutions in Indonesia. Through C-MOUTH, UNAIR students demonstrate how interdisciplinary collaboration across faculties can lead to practical, life-saving technologies. Their work not only elevates the university’s research profile but also contributes directly to community health initiatives, supporting both academic excellence and public service missions of the institution.
