The Student Association of Fisheries Product Technology (HIMATEKHIKAN) at Universitas Airlangga has reaffirmed its commitment to academic outreach and community engagement through the implementation of FISTECH ACTION, an educational program designed to broaden public understanding of fisheries processing technology. Organized by the Social Affairs Division, this initiative reflects the organization’s dedication to disseminating knowledge on modern and innovative fish processing methods while emphasizing the importance of fish consumption as a high-quality protein source in Indonesia’s daily diet.
The Fisheries Product Technology Student Association (HIMATEKHIKAN) of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga, initiated FISTECH ACTION as a structured educational outreach program aimed at strengthening literacy in fisheries processing technology among students and the wider community. The program was developed in response to the growing need for accessible scientific information regarding value-added fishery products and sustainable food innovation. By focusing on educational dissemination, the initiative supports academic development within the Fisheries Product Technology study program while simultaneously contributing to community empowerment. FISTECH ACTION underscores the strategic role of fisheries processing technology in enhancing food security, promoting product diversification, and increasing the economic value of marine resources. Through this initiative, HIMATEKHIKAN seeks to bridge academic knowledge and practical application, ensuring that technological advancements in fish processing are not confined to laboratories or classrooms but are translated into real-world impact.
The program was conducted periodically every Wednesday from April to November 2025, utilizing Instagram as its primary platform for information dissemination. The eight-month implementation period adopted a fully online format, enabling the program to reach audiences beyond geographical limitations. Educational poster content was published once each month, providing comprehensive insights into various fish processing techniques, including modern preservation methods, product innovation strategies, and small-scale processing applications. This publication frequency was strategically designed to ensure consistency while allowing audiences sufficient time to absorb and apply the knowledge presented. By leveraging digital media, HIMATEKHIKAN demonstrated an adaptive approach aligned with contemporary learning trends, where social media functions not only as a communication channel but also as an effective educational medium.
The content presented through FISTECH ACTION combined informative and inspirational elements, featuring visually engaging educational posters that illustrated fisheries processing technologies applicable at both industrial and household scales. The creative approach in content design aimed not merely to inform but also to motivate audiences to explore innovative fish processing methods with high economic potential. The primary target audience included Fisheries Product Technology students and members of the public interested in fish-based food processing. Through the official HIMATEKHIKAN Instagram platform, the program successfully reached diverse communities, including culinary enthusiasts, micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) actors in the fisheries sector, and individuals seeking to develop skills in seafood-based food production. The key output of FISTECH ACTION was the widespread dissemination of accessible educational materials that enhanced public awareness regarding product diversification and the importance of technological innovation in fisheries processing.
FISTECH ACTION has demonstrated significant potential as a sustainable educational and innovation dissemination platform within the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Airlangga. The program’s ability to generate audience engagement and promote knowledge transfer highlights the effectiveness of digital-based educational strategies in higher education and community service contexts. By integrating academic insights with public outreach, HIMATEKHIKAN contributes to strengthening the tri dharma of higher education, particularly in community engagement and applied knowledge dissemination. Moving forward, HIMATEKHIKAN remains committed to continuing and further developing FISTECH ACTION in future periods by refining its content strategy and expanding its publication outreach. This commitment reflects the organization’s broader mission to support academic excellence, research application, and societal empowerment through fisheries processing technology innovation.
