A group of students from the Fisheries Product Technology Study Program, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universitas Airlangga, successfully completed their Field Work Practice (Internship) at PT Perikanan Indonesia, Mayangan Unit, Probolinggo, East Java, from July 7 to September 4, 2025. The internship was attended by three students — Fauziah Zanishar Diannisa, Laras Anjani Prameswari, and Eka Putri Septianingsih — who took part in a series of professional learning activities aimed at deepening their understanding of industrial fish processing practices.
During the two-month program, the students had the opportunity to observe firsthand the production process of frozen fish carried out by the company. The observation covered every production stage, from raw material reception, sorting, weighing, washing, freezing, packaging, to distribution. Throughout each phase, the students did not only observe the operational workflow but also learned how the company ensures product quality and safety by implementing key quality assurance systems such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP), and Critical Control Points (CCP). This comprehensive exposure allowed them to gain an in-depth understanding of how industrial fisheries operations maintain high standards of hygiene and efficiency in line with global food safety regulations.
The internship provided valuable hands-on experience that allowed the students to witness how quality assurance systems are implemented in the real industrial setting. They learned the importance of maintaining product quality and food safety at every production line, as well as the challenges industries face in consistently applying these systems. From technical aspects of fish processing to maintaining regulatory compliance, the experience helped them bridge theoretical learning with real-world practices in the fisheries sector.
Beyond technical competencies, the students also developed essential soft skills through their interactions with field supervisors and company staff. This experience enhanced their work discipline, communication skills, and adaptability in a professional environment. According to the participants, the internship was not only a platform for gaining practical skills but also an opportunity to strengthen their readiness for future careers in the fisheries industry. By engaging directly with industry professionals, they were able to better understand workplace dynamics, teamwork, and the value of maintaining integrity and accuracy in production processes.
The Field Work Practice at PT Perikanan Indonesia Mayangan Unit thus served as an important bridge between academic learning and industrial application. It exemplifies how Universitas Airlangga continuously encourages its students to gain real-world experience as part of its mission to produce competent, adaptive, and globally competitive graduates in fisheries science and technology.
